And you may be surprised more by who didn't crack the list

Payne said he has pared his list to five schools: Kansas, Kentucky, Arizona, Michigan State and West Virginia.

Most including the big dogs thought Dayton and more importantly Ohio State would be major players for his services.

“I know a lot of people in Dayton, and I want to be focused on school without a lot of distractions,” Payne said by phone from Orlando between games in an AAU tournament.

“I like the (UD) players a lot. Chris (Wright) is my cousin and everything. It was a tough decision. ... I don’t know where I want to go, but I just feel it was too close.”

For now he has decided he wants to get out of Ohio. Despite what many have thought OSU was never really a factor in his recruitment as he wants to get out of Sullinger's shadow.

As for my take on Payne, he's going to drive the fan base of whatever school he lands at insane for at least 2 years if he stays that long. His lofty ranking is strictly on potential and brief flashes of dominance, but his actual basketball prowess leaves a lot to be desired. Every two or three games he will be the most dominant player on the court for 3 minutes and then next to nothing untill his next 3 minute stretch the next day...

GT I have to say I love your breakdowns on recruits. You say more in three sentences than most say in a full article.

The kid sounds like he will tell you what you want to hear. I know of 3 schools not on the list that supposedly all thought they were his choice.

He's the kind of kid that tells you NOTHING. I'm close to the only guy in the recruiting business that even gets his calls answered, and he is still guessing. If he told people what they want to hear, this would be an even bigger recruiting mess...

Similar knock on Yancey Gates coming out of high school?

Not even close.

Really bad comparison.

Gates has his flaws, but they are nothing close to dealing with Payne...

I still wouldn't mind having Payne on UK's roster next year. We could definitely use a big man considering we will probably be loosing the two starting big men after this season. Most players out of high school have flaws especially when it comes to big men. It's just really hard to find a polished big man coming out of high school. They are out there don't get me wrong though. I'm just saying despite these flaws I consider Payne a top three target for UK next year.

I never really thought he'd come to UD, but it was nice to dream. Even without him, UD will have one of its best recruiting classes ever coming next year. Good luck Adreian; the Gem City will miss you.

I agree. We will be losing most of the front court and he would be a nice body to have to come in and fill a roster spot. Its not out of the question that Orton might be looking to leave if his stock is high enough. I hope not though, and I think it is unlikely. Like GT said, I have read a lot about his effort and how he disappears a lot more than he shows off his skills. But, he also seems like the type of guy who does better when there's a lot of talent around him and when he doesn't have to be the man. I would like to see him at Kentucky. Based on potential or not, there are not too many 5* bigs left on the board, and anytime you can land a top 15 guy you got to do it.

I saw Gates play as a senior. He played very hard in the 3 or 4 games I seen him and didn't have an attitude problem in those particular games that I could tell.

If that was the case, he'd be a lot more impressive on the AAU scene as All Ohio Red has been the best team in the nation in their age group for at least the last 3 years...

GT you know as well as I do that AAU is night and day from high school/college ball. Some of these kids do not get into it at all, and it certainly sounds like Payne is one of those guys. For some reason, most guys envy their summer being taken by traveling and playing tournaments, whether this is the case with Payne no one will know, but there has to be some reason why he doesn't hardly give any kind of effort. I also think that something may have to do with Sullinger being around on All Ohio Red that makes Payne think he doesn't have to do as much for his team to be successful in the paint. Whatever the case, I for some reason think Payne will be a much better and more consistent college player than high school player. Nowadays the AAU circuit is the realm to improve your college stock, while how you do in college will factor into what your NBA stock looks like. With the status he has right now, I am sure he doesn't want to waste any kind of chance to play in the NBA. The ability is there, he just has to show he can keep his head in it, and put out an effort on a consistent basis. There's not too many top 15 guys who don't want to play in the NBA, and for him to do so he will have to bring his game onto the college level.
