Needed? No. But, I think it adds a little something to the game.

 

High School sports pretty much copies everything they do from College and Professional sports, the offense, the defense, the rules, and this is just one more thing that makes the high school game more like a college game.

 

I'm not saying it a must, just an added feature.

 

I don't believe that our ref's would want to openly admit some of the calls they make. I do like the idea though. I also like the idea of a player's # being called out, it could help reduce silly penalties. Ever see a guilty player hurry back to hide in the huddle when he is guilty? Then when he is found out, he lowers his hands, "It was'nt me."

I have to politely disagree. The high school rules are set up for safety and not to bring notice to the individual. The proper mechanic for penalties is to point the direction of the offending team, not to single out the offending player.

Technology advances need to be universal across all of the high schools nationwide. Can every school afford to put a broadcast quality mic ( and batteries, and a back up unit) and wireless receiver? I know a lot of fine referees that get hampered with a bad microphone, so much that it reflects poorly on them. What happens when the scoreboard keeps going out? You pull the plug and keep the time on the field. MIcrophones are great when the school has invested a good amount into the system. Otherwise, it takes away from the game and the kids.( imvho)

I do not ever remember Western Hills doing this! Tell me when if you can. I have been to a few games every year for a long time. :idunno:

 

2003 and 2004...not sure if they had since then though.

Dixie tried this a few years back. I liked the idea, but it rarely worked properly.

As a referee, I like it specifically when we have something that is not a traditional holding penalty. Example I had a call a Raceland a few years back that ended up with offsetting penalties that caused a rekick. It will much easier to give a 5 second explantion and everyone knew rekick and why. In times like that much easier, plus I don't have to run my fat butt from sideline to sideline to explain to coaches.

I've worn a mic at Carroll Co. I also have worked games where the referee wore a mic for radio or tv broadcasts. It is rare in high school, and many referees don't like wearing them mostly because they are not used to wearing them. There can be problems if the referee leaves the mic open when it should not be, or forgets to open it when it should be open. There have also been occassions when the mic equipment is not properly setup, batteries charged, will not work in all areas of the field, or problems related to weather. I prefer not using a mic. It is really not needed if the PA announcer is properly using the cheat sheet for signals, and the R gives accurate signals.

 

You nailed it. I did the PA at a local high school for several years and nothing frustrated me more than a white hat who didn't give the proper signals. Then I would listen to radio announcers, TV announcers or PA announcers at other fields when the signals were perfect and had no idea where they were getting the call they were announcing. I really have seen more PA announcers who didn't understand the signals than officials who didn't give the proper signals.

What Western Hills have you been watching? Western Hills from Cincinnati? Western Hills has been doing this at home games for at least 5-6 years.
