Dixie pitching indeed won't be depleted, as they have Smallwood and Stansberry two very good pitchers.

But if Sainola is on the hump and he is on, I don't see Beechwood scoring a run off of him, I can't say the same thing for Beechwood if they don't pitch Smith. Neither Beechwood nor Highlands are very good hitting teams, but HHS will have a better chance of scoring a run off of Bertke than Beechwood will have of scoring a run off either Sainola or Head.

If Smith goes, chalk up a W for Bwood if not, HHS will move on!

To play on Tuesday, you have to win on Monday.

What does it matter if you play on Tuesday if you do not have the pitching to compete with the team you are against? Who remembers the teams year after year that were in the quarter finals?

Alot of people criticized Myerhoff for not throwing Elliott against Boone last year. If BW plays better defense in that game they win. What games did Conner throw for NCC last year to be able to beat CCH in the championship game? People are quick to criticize for not throwing your ace against a good team but I did not see anyone criticize NCC for having JC to throw the 'ship last year.

I feel you set your pitching for the tournament. It comes down to the draw. If everyone feels you have to win Monday to play Tuesday, Why should CCH not throw Isler against St. Henry?

If NCC throws Conner and Ryle throws Etscheid........

How good of a game will it be on Tuesday if CCH beats St. Henry? Does Ryle or NCC have a number 2 that can compete with that hitting?

I will be surprised if Smith starts for BW against HHS.

If it rains at all it will be interesting to see how that has an impact on the footing of the pitchers plant foot. Since there is no dirt on the field at all. Sliding should be fun also after a slight rain.

You are correct people do forget! It rained and that is the only reason why Conner pitched! Without the rain Conner doesn't pitch.

Or as I should have said can't pitch, due to inning restrictions!

If it rains, pitchers are allowed to wear metal spikes from what I was told and read!

According to Clint Brown the owner of the Freedom, the only players who may wear metal spikes are pitchers, and that's only if the field is wet.

I've been told it's a lot harder to wear metal spikes on their field anyways. A lot of turf fields like St. X and LexCath have dirt in the batters box and on the mound. The entire field is turf at the Freedom's park. An example of something being more difficult is when a batter is trying to turn on a ball and "squish the bug" the spikes are probably going to get stuck and make it harder to do so. It's to a players advantage to wear a different shoe. The pitchers maybe not so much because I could see a lot of slipping when following through, even when dry.

There are simply acceptable risks to take in tournament type play. Not throwing Isler against St. H. is more than an acceptable risk, because CCH has plenty of quality backup pitching, as well as more than enough hitting to handle St. H.

But then there are games that you simply can't afford the risk. A CCH-Ryle/NCC matchup would be one of those IMO. I would throw Isler in this game because: 1) you don't win it, you don't play in the championship the next night, and; 2) CCH has other pitching that would certainly keep them in the next game. In fact, it's a safe bet to say that even having thrown Isler, they will still have the best pitching to offer of any other team still playing on Wednesday night.

As far as "what does it matter if you play on Tuesday if you do not have the pitching to compete with the team you are against?", I would say this. Baseball is a funny game and strange things sometimes happen. I've seen some very good hitting teams get knocked off by a powderpuff pitcher who had their timing all screwed up. Whether or not you think you have sufficient pitching for that Tuesday game or not, I gaurantee you stand a better chance of winning that game if you are at least playing in it. Nothing worse than saving your stud pitcher for the big game you never reach. :thumb:

Ryle's number 2 (Kyle Donovan) is a very good pitcher that just shut down Conner and was named to the all-district team. He has pitched twice against CCH this year - once in a 4-2 loss where he pitched well and once in a 17-7 loss where he was hit hard. He will not shut out CCH, but certainly can keep Ryle in the game and in a matchup like that, that's all you want - a chance to stay in the game and pull off the upset.

I completely agree with Coachg13207 on this one. I personally think it wouldn't be a smart move for either NCC or Ryle to throw their aces against each other. Like TOG stated CCH has beaten Ryle 4 times and I believe they have beaten NCC 2 or 3 as well. In those four games Ryle has pitched Etscheid and Donovan twice resulting in four losses. However if you look at the scores stated above in the thread with Etscheid on the mound they lost to CCH by the score of 2 to 1 twice. With Donovan on the mound they have lost 4 to 2 and 17 to 7. Don't get me wrong Donovan is a great pitcher but when you face CCH in the regional and you want a great chance at knocking them off you have to go with Etscheid.(Which still has yet to happen) Same goes with NCC if you waste Connor in the first round you set yourself up for a run rule the second round. I recall attending the NCC vs CCH game at CCH with Isler and Meyer on the mound. Let's just say it wasn't pretty...10 run rule in the 5th and Isler maybe gave up one hit. NCC couldn't touch him nor even get the ball out of the infield.

If you NCC you have to love your chances playing CCH with Connor on the mound. Even last year, CCH was the heavy favorite until Connor stepped on the mound and led the Breds to the Regional Title. All the pressure would be on CCH who is even more favorited this year then last.

You have to play to win the tournament or actually have a shot. Especially with how loaded CCH is this year.

CCH's draw is great beacuse it really doesn't matter who they throw. They go with Krumme the first game against St. Henry. Either Isler or Nutuni second round against NCC/Ryle. But it really doesn't matter who throws that game beacuse no matter who they would play in the finals I would definately take Isler over anyone and Nutuni over anyone besides Smith. However Beechwood isn't going to get by HHS, Dixie, and Connor without throwing Smith in the first or second round.

What you are saying is quite true, but who blinks first? Conner pitching for NCC is a win for NCC and they move on if Etscheid isn't pitching for Ryle. The same goes for Ryle if they pitch Etscheid and NCC doesn't pitch Conner, it's a win for Ryle. So who blinks first? You got to win on Monday to play on Tuesday....

So what coach is willing to lose a game with their ace on the bench and then take the grief from the fans, the school, and even your own players?

BTW per football rankings it lines up this way

6A. Ryle, and Conner

5A. Dixie

4A. CovCath

3A. Highlands

2A. NCC and St. Henry

1A. Beechwood

Looks like a pretty fair spread of large and small schools in the mix, at least in the Ninth Region!

:thumb: Completely agree.

Just for the record....

Beechwood beat HHS at HHS without throwing Smith a couple weeks ago. I will be surprised if Smith starts this game. I know in the post season everyone is 0 and 0. I am just throwing it out there.
