I've witnessed an umpire award a runner third base on a ground rule double this year. Boone County played Franklin County a few weeks ago. A ball was hit in the gap and rolled under the fence. Boones outfeilder raised his hands once he saw the ball on the other side by 10 feet. The base umpire signaled a ground rule double. The Franklin County coach gets into a conversation with home plate ump who then awards the hitter a triple! His explanation was by the time the outfeilder raised his hands the runners had passed second base??? This has nothing to do with the rule nor in the event it was true how could the umpire determine when the ball went under the fence as opposed to when the feilder finally raised his arms? Yes sir. He was given a ground rule triple. Both runs scored.

 

My comments are more to address how many umpires do not know the rules of baseball this year. To many mistakes.

 

Anyway, the $5 bucks to get in would not be hard to ytake if I knew $2.00 was going to a light fund. Temporary fencing is not safe anyway. Also, seems to have been a great game to watch to end in a tie. What a bus ride home that must have been.

 

The umpire clearly made a mistake. There is no a argument that can be made to justify awarding 3 bases.

I'm pretty sure the no lights deal at Lex Cath is due to the houses around the school. I think certain neighbors in the area argued about them putting lights in on that side of the school.

I totally agree Clyde. Boone coach was one word from being tossed! Anyway, the kids suffered on that call. Sorry to pull anyone off track. Just thought I'd throw that one in there! I'm sure both teams last night were disappointed. That's almost like a heavyweight fight ending in a tie with both boxers bloodied up in there corners!

There should have been 3 runs scored because by the time the left fielder threw his arms up, he was 20 feet from where the ball rolled out and the runner from first was just rounding third. No possible chance of him being thrown out. Isn't it legal for an umpire to take control and say the run would have scored anyways?

You may be thinking of fan interference (not usually an issue in a HS game). I'm fairly confident that umpire has discretion in awarding bases based on where the runners would have ended up in a fan interference situation. OG is right on ground rule doubles -- from time of pitch.

I would disagree. The "and" prior to the name might lead "some" to believe the name after the conjunction was the last pitcher. While most would recognize it I feel its my duty to make sure that one person who might not know that doesn't get confused.:laugh:
