Theoldguy Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 CovCath 8 LexCath 8 (8) innings called due to darkness. Too tired and to late to post anymore.
The Engineer Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 It appears Lexington Catholic needs lights. There have been a lot of dark outs for them ending in ties.
Blue Magic Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 It appears Lexington Catholic needs lights. There have been a lot of dark outs for them ending in ties. A lot has to do with that building in right field. Without it I'm guessing another 20-30 minutes of light would come from the building not blocking the sun.
The Engineer Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 You must mean the building in Left. They have a temporary fence in right and the football field is past the fence. Regardless, lights wouldn't hurt!

You're right. :ohbrother: Just a brain typo. Also, with the double (stand up triple if it had not gone through the wall) that went through the left field wall, just my 2 cents, 3 runs SHOULD HAVE BEEN AWARDED to CovCath. :idunno:
Knuckle Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 You would think they would have a hard time getting people to come inand play during the week with a chance not to get a full game in.

I'm assuming the ball didn't bounce over the fence like a traditional ground rule double. I'm also guessing that due to it being a temporary fence that somehow the ball sneaked through a crack. So it would still be a ground rule double and the ump doesn't have any ruling in the book to allow him to award 3 bases on a GR double. Edited May 13, 2009 by Clyde

Nah, they could probably play on a garbage landfill and people would come play them. Everyone wants a chance to come in and beat mighty Lex Cath.
Theoldguy Posted May 13, 2009 Author Posted May 13, 2009 Lexington Herald Leader LexCath-CovCath play to a tie By Mike Fields - mfields@herald-leader.com Tuesday's showdown between top-10 baseball powers Covington Catholic and Lexington Catholic figured to be a spotlight game on the schedule as both teams prepped for next week's playoffs. If only there had been a spotlight or two illuminating Lexington Catholic's field. As it turned out, nothing was decided as No. 6 CovCath and No. 9 Lexington Catholic played to an extra-inning 8-8 tie. The game was called at about 8:45 p.m. because of darkness
Theoldguy Posted May 13, 2009 Author Posted May 13, 2009 Just a couple of short thoughts on the game before I have to leave to go to work. Tough to go from a playing on a field where you had time to read a book and take a sip of a drink, before the ball got to you at Beechwood, to playing on very old astro turf type field that was like playing a game in the parking lot. The man in blue was as bad as I have seen calling balls and strikes, now before you get on me for crying, it was the College scouts that were near me, that were just shaking there heads on some of the calls. Speaking of the men in blue, allowing the game to go into the 8th inning could have gotten someone hurt. It was too dark IMO when LC got there chance in the bottom of the 8th. The game should have been called after seven. The ball from what I could see literally went through the fence (not under or over) . If it stays in side the park, it's a base loaded triple. Truly having such a short fence in right and right center with turf on the ground is a ground rule double waiting to happen any time a batter hits the ball hard to that side of the field. Gota go to work....
FANOFTHE11th Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Had no idea Lex Cath didn't have lights for their baseball diamond!!!!!!
Theoldguy Posted May 13, 2009 Author Posted May 13, 2009 BTW, I was totally surprised with having to pay $5.00 a person to see a HS baseball game. I do realize that CovCath charges to attend but $5.00 even for students , is just a bit much.
lOKE27 Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Clarify what you mean when you say "through the wall." I'm assuming the ball didn't bounce over the fence like a traditional ground rule double. I'm also guessing that due to it being a temporary fence that somehow the ball sneaked through a crack. So it would still be a ground rule double and the ump doesn't have any ruling in the book to allow him to award 3 bases on a GR double. I've witnessed an umpire award a runner third base on a ground rule double this year. Boone County played Franklin County a few weeks ago. A ball was hit in the gap and rolled under the fence. Boones outfeilder raised his hands once he saw the ball on the other side by 10 feet. The base umpire signaled a ground rule double. The Franklin County coach gets into a conversation with home plate ump who then awards the hitter a triple! His explanation was by the time the outfeilder raised his hands the runners had passed second base??? This has nothing to do with the rule nor in the event it was true how could the umpire determine when the ball went under the fence as opposed to when the feilder finally raised his arms? Yes sir. He was given a ground rule triple. Both runs scored. My comments are more to address how many umpires do not know the rules of baseball this year. To many mistakes. Anyway, the $5 bucks to get in would not be hard to ytake if I knew $2.00 was going to a light fund. Temporary fencing is not safe anyway. Also, seems to have been a great game to watch to end in a tie. What a bus ride home that must have been.
