I saw it last night as well and I am by far a "Trekkie", but I really enjoyed the movie. The graphics were awesome and it had it's own version of how Kirk became a commander. I thought it was very interesting, but I will tell you...a movie has to really blow for me not to enjoy it!

This Movie has brought new life to a series that had in recent years become stale and predictiable . Saw it in I-Max last night at the Levee very very good action film . A lot of indie comments in that if you don't know the series will go over your head .

It was a decent enough movie and it deserves some positive accolades. If you are not a fan of Star Trek but would be intrigued by it this is probably the movie for you.

 

The concept of what they did with the time-line is not particularly clever but it is about the only way you can get this kind of story without infuriating the initial fan base.

 

I thought it was well cast and Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy was quite possibly the best casting decision they made. Simon Pegg as Scotty was good as well.

 

Abrams did have his "I made a monster movie" moment which I guess was because he couldn't resist.

 

They left things open for sequels which was good because there is room for development with the characters.

 

 

I had never, in my life, seen any Star Trek episodes or movies before going to see this one tonight.

 

I probably still won't get into the old ones, but this movie was great. I thought it was extremely well-cast, except for Dr. McCoy. That's where I disagree with you. Maybe, it's something I didn't get because I haven't seen any of the old "Star Treks," but there was something I just didn't like about him. However, I do think that Simon Pegg was a great casting decision. And hats off to Quinto, the guy who played Spock.

 

 

Overall, a VERY solid movie, and from my own experience, you don't need to know anything about Star Trek to enjoy it.

 

As for summer blockbuster status, I still think this one will be blown out of the water by the new Harry Potter that's coming out.

I can't possibly fathom why you don't like Karl Urban as McCoy. I never would have expected it, but he was the spitting image of a young Deforest Kelly and had the perfect personality for the role.

 

I also wouldn't classify this movie as great, it was mediocre, with the cast though I think they have tons of potential if they do it right. I however am still extremely harsh on all films I see, especially ones that like to use franchises I grew up with. i.e. Transformers, Star Wars, GI Joe and so on.

 

It takes more than a jerky camera, quick cuts and bright lights for me to get into a film. I actually felt the camera work was problematic during the space sequences and they really wasted money on Eric Bana. If you are going to go out and get Eric Bana at least give him enough lines to let him make the character his own. Otherwise find some mid-range actor and use the money elsewhere.

I didn't think he was bad, but if you are going to get someone like Eric Bana don't give him 10 minutes of screen time.

He just had a few lines that were cheesy, IMO. I didn't grow up with the franchise. This is the first Star Trek I've ever seen, so again, maybe that's why. I did think Simon Pegg was a great casting choice for Scotty.

Saw it last night. There was just me and the Mrs. in the theater. Like a personal viewing. Just the way I like it.

 

I am a trekkie of sorts. I don't own the service manuals for all 6 versions of the Enterprise and attend conventions, like a friend of mine does, but I own the complete original series, TNG, and Voyager. I didn't care for DS9, but I liked Enterprise and am going to get that eventually. I also own all 10 of the previous movies. This one will definitley be added.

I loved everthing about it. I especially loved how they tore up the time line of the original product so new stories can be developed with the original characters.

I finally saw this a couple days ago, and loved it.
