Shelby Valley Team to beat

Featured Replies

True they did. I just think Elliott is a better team and if Shelby Valley had won bigger I would probally put them above Elliott. However, I think the Shelby Valley loss helped Elliott more then anything, and watching them beat Mason and Ballard, (and I know it was on Elliotts home floor) the Lions are better because of the loss. And you are right there is no way to know for sure how to rank teams. Perhaps I have been a little hard on Cantralls rankings, however I just dont think that Mason is better then Elliott and Holmes. Shelby Valley being ranked #1 could be argued, because in my opinion the 2009 state champion is going to be Elliott, Holmes, Shelby Valley or Eastern. :thumb:

I understand everyone questioning the top 5, but how does anyone know? You are saying that Elliott should be higher than SV, but didn't SV beat Elliott in the All-A?

I don't know, after watching Eastern last night, I'd say they might be the early favorites.

If you watched the SV/Elliott game than you would know that it was clearly dominated in every aspect of the game by SV except for at the free throw line. If SV hits half of their free throws instead of missing their last 12, they win by 10+. I am not saying that Elliott can't beat them, but they sure didn't look like it on that night.

If both teams win today, I'll take Elliott by double figures in the rematch.

So your one of those hey. Anyway, we know Shelby Valley won, and hats off to a great team, and I put Holmes as #1 so I dont think I am totally blinding by bias. Anyways I know the game happened, I dont deny that. But thats like saying Boone County is better then Holmes because they beat them once. Sometimes a great team loses, it happens in every level of basketball, perhaps you dont know enough about basketball to understand that? Sorry you are so ill towards Elliott, since I am sure they and their fans have done so much harm to you. Be a sport, I wish all teams luck, and I like seeing fans excited about their teams. That is what being a basketball fan is about, enjoyment. Sorry you have to take it so seriously and want to "remind," Elliott fans of one of their loses. Perhaps if Elliott haters would get over the shock and jealousy of a small school being so good, you could see why fans like them so much and then maybe you would truly understand the game.:thumb:

Too inconvenient. The Elliott apologists would rather just act as though that game never happened. I try to remind them as much as possible. :D

On another note, I wish people would stop interchanging the words "poll" and "ratings" in this thread. No one votes to decide the Cantrall rankings, unless you want to start calling computers "pollsters."

In the grand scheme of things, high school basketball is not important enough for me to "hate" any team. You and other Elliott Co. fans should stop taking it personally when someone doesn't feel like jumping on the Elliott County Love-fest Bandwagon that has swept across the state.

I wouldn't have to remind Elliott Co. fans about the SV loss if Elliott fans weren't trying so hard to act as though it never happened. Just because I point that out doesn't mean I think EC is somehow not an outstanding team, or that I don't enjoy watching them play.

And I feel pretty strong about my knowledge of basketball, so I'm pretty secure. But if you want to accuse me of not knowing anything about the game just because you don't like what I have to say, so be it. I'll still sleep well tonight. :thumb:

Awesome post Jim.

You hit the nail on the head.

I dont know where you are getting that we "act like it never happened." We at Elliott talk about what a great team Shelby has, and how it will be a great game between the two if they meet again. Thats a big if because both teams have to make it through a tough first round. So do you hang out in Sandy Hook all the time and listen to people as they conspire to pretend the game never happened? And I dont really care if you lose sleep or not so I dont understand that statement. However you just implied that you liked rubbing in the fact that Elliott lost a game. Who is your team? Have they lost this year? Does losing to a team always mean you are not better? And no you do not like Elliott. If you did you wouldnt have anything negative to say about them or their fans. If you have the impression that we do not give teams that beat us their due, then you are way off base. And I believe you are the one who is trying to get personal. I was having a conversation with someone about rankings when you have to jump in and say you like rubbing an Elliott County loss in. So it seems that your feelings were hurt by my having Elliott ranked #2, which I dont think is that illogical. Hope you sleep well.:thumb:

Who of the Elliott fans have ever acted as though the Shelby Valley game did not exist? I would guarantee that I have saw far more Elliott games than you in the last 4 years. Most Elliott fans say Shelby Valley is deserving of their high ranking, but Elliott played as poorly as they have played all year in that game. Believe me there were many open shots missed by Elliott in that game. Not to discredit Shelby Valley's defense, but Elliott did not play up to their potential during that game.

I can see where some Elliott fans believe that Elliott should be ranked higher in these polls, because Elliott still has only lost one in-state game against Shelby Valley. Shelby Valley has lost one in-state game against a non-ranked opponent. Plus Elliott has had the harder schedule of the two teams. What was that everyone was saying earlier in the year, well you have to play somebody in-state to deserve your ranking. I guess that doesn't count towards Shelby Valley, since they have only played one top team. I am not saying Elliott should be ranked ahead of Shelby Valley, but I can see the argument from both sides. As far as Mason County, they have lost 6 in-state games and lost to Elliott by double figures, yet they are ranked ahead of Elliott County. I can't possibly see any reason why Mason is ahead of Elliott in the polls. But oh well I guess the only game this guy saw was the Shelby Valley game too.

Don't worry no Elliott fans are ever going to lose any sleep over what you or Les have to say, either. So everyone should be well-rested for the state tournament.

You're taking it personally again.

Here's the facts:

Shelby Valley beat Elliott Co. head-to-head. Would have done so by a lot more than the final margin if SV hit their FTs because, as one poster already noted, SV completely dominated the game.

On this board, almost to a man/woman, Elliott Co. fans gloss over the SV loss and consistently rate their team above SV — pretty much to the point that they can't even entertain the idea that SV would do it again. When folks like myself point out that EC fans aren't giving SV enough respect for their thorough beating of your team, EC fans get excessively defensive (much like what you're doing in this thread) and call them "haters." Or, they just ignore it and hope that loss will just go away.

What you call "rubbing it in" is what I would call "keeping Elliott fans honest and grounded." I have no animosity toward Elliott County, so how am I rubbing anything in? It just feels that way to you because you're taking it personally.

I know I am well rested.

If both teams win today, I'll take Elliott by double figures in the rematch.

Not a chance. SV will beat Elliott again. Justice is the 1 kid in the state that the Faulkners can't frustrate.

Another great post Jim.

Alright, I am not really in the mood for this back and forth kids game. I am rooting for Elliott you are rooting for yours. Good luck to all teams in the tournament. Elliott if you dont make it, I hope Shelby Valley, another mountain team wins it all. GO LIONS>>>>

We don't need you to keep us honest and grounded! Take a nap.
