Which is something Christian Co's own coach has been quoted as saying they need to do a better job of doing...controlling their emotions on and off the floor.

 

I think Holmes defense will frustrate them as well. Christian Co is going to need more than Wilson and Wilford to beat this Holmes team.

 

I really see Holmes' size with Pittman down low being the difference in this one.

Holmes will win and I want them to win, but they really need to pick it up on the offensive side of things, or it could be a short trip. I see Pittman's size advantage being a big difference.

Now if Christian Co. is a running team, then I really could see Holmes going off. The question is would Christian Co. fore go their own style of play to go with what has almost worked for some of the teams who chose to slow it down? I don't know much about them but by last night's score they probably don't play anything like 9th Region 'D' Ball.

 

I'm leaning towards thinking that Christian will run, giving the Bulldogs the open door to show what a dynamic team they really are and that they really can put some points on the board. I really don't see a tremendously high scoring game, but again if they run I can see:

Christian County won't back down from trying to play its style against anybody. I suspect Holmes will be trying to slow the game down to get at a pace they feel the most comfortable with.

 

The key for Christian County is their perimeter shooting. They will take a lot of 3s ... if they don't shoot themselves out of the game, it could be an interesting game going into the fourth quarter.

 

In my opinion, the Colonels are the most talented team west of Louisville. But they don't always play like it. They could win a game or two at the Sweet 16 with the right draw, but I don't think this is it.

Christian County is playing awfully well right now. Survived a hiccup in the first round of the region tournament against Webster County. This team is deep enough to run with Holmes and they play solid defense. Plus, this is a team that has been in Rupp three of the last four years so the awe factor won't affect them much. Should be one of the best first round games.

We all know Wilson and Wilford are studs, but how do you see Kates, Murden, and Lewis matching up with Holmes? What are their strengths/weaknesses?

 

I see Murden or Kates, whoever guards him, having a lot of trouble with Pittman down low as he will have atleast a 2 or 3 inch advantage over both.

Why am I not surprised that you picked Holmes opponent? Do you ever pick Holmes to win a game? Might there be a reason?

I dont see Kates as a factor. Christian County's guards are awfully quick and I expect them to throw some zones at Holmes and play the passing lanes. They were able to contain Hopkins Central pretty well in the region semis and they go 6-9, 6-8, 6-4 across the front. They hit 9/13 3-pointers in the first half of that one. As westsider said, if the shots are falling, Holmes may be in some trouble.

How does Christian Co compare to Henderson Co? I seem to remember Henderson hitting a lot of 3's against Holmes as well, but their lack of an inside presence hurting them, as Pittman had I believe 26 or 27 against them.

Quicker, deeper, and more athletic. Kerry Stovall is also one of the more underrated coaches in the state.

I wouldn't really call it intense. They stay between their man and the basket, challenge every shot (and block quite a few). But to me - being intense is getting out in passing lanes and disrupting the other team. Getting up in someone and applying big time pressure. I didn't see that in their regional final. Their D is very good and efficient, but not real intense imo.

 

 

When is the last time Holmes played a game where they got out and ran? I only remember one fast break in the Boone game and Holmes had a 2 on 1 but the bounce pass went through the other player's hands and out of bounds back to Boone. I was expecting a lob dunk.

I picked Holmes to win, but I think this game goes down to the wire. If I had to pick an upset in the 1st round it would be this one. Saw Wilford in the summer several times and he can really shoot the long range ball and is quick and athletic. Christian probably won't get their 80 or 90 points in this one, but Holmes better score twice as much as they scored their last game out or they will go home early.

I remember that Henderson Co game as well, Holmes did give up some outside jumpshots, however that was before there perimeter defense really stepped up. With games in the districts and regions against teams that can light it up like Beechwood and New Cath, the Bulldogs really got out to gaurd and give them fits. They can pack it in with there size or get out on shooters with the athleticism. The D has really taken strides in the last month or so, and while people say the offense has had some let downs, it is because teams hold the ball, I have seen one possession (in the NCC game) that lasted 1:46. That was every N.Ky team's goal against the Dawgs this season, when the stepped away from the N.Ky games and played teams like Bryan Station, Scott Co., Tates Creek, Seneca, and Franklin Co. they proved they can get up in the 70 and win.

 

Also FYI, Holmes has scored 100+ points more than anyone in the 9th and are averaging right around 60 game even though 1/2 of there schedule wanted to stall it out against them.

Holmes did as much stalling as Boone did in the finals.

IMO after reading all the replies throughout this thread from Eky, Nky, well the whole state. Most of the comments are from the teams that really don't want the Bulldogs to win because of the fear of facing the Dawgs or because of sour grapes of Holmes run the last 5 years. :sssh: I promise the state of KY, if you come to Rupp Arena and get to watch the Bulldogs. You will be surprised of the athletic ability of these boys, who without a dought in my mind has the best defense you will ever see in High School basketball. That is straight up man to man defense. No zone-:taz:-Period!!! Any player on that court, "not just the starters" they get so low in a defensive position and will be in your chest throughout your movement of the ball :isurrender: is that of no other high school team I have seen. I have heard fans say the Dawgs don't score enough to win down state and your team ave's 70 or 80. It won't happen if they play the Bulldogs. :thumb: Then you will hear other fans say, they only ave 60 pts. a game. I have been to 30 of the 34 games this year.(My bad Dawgs for missing 4 :lol:) I have seen throughout NKy the teams slow the ball down all the time. I can probably count about 10 times where a team didn't get to shoot a shot after half time for a full 2 minutes. Almost the whole ninth region had to slow the game down because they thought it was the only way to be able to run with the Bulldogs. If the opposing team holds the ball from 45 seconds to 2 min. There won't be many high scoring games. :idunno: So in closing, I am heading south to Rupp next Wed. Plan to bring my son.
