That doesn't necessarily hold for the girls. The voters don't care for UK women's hoops the same way they do for the boys.

 

It is true that a lot of great players have gotten screwed out of Mr. Basketball over the years because of the UK homerism, which is sad.

 

As far as the ladies this year, you can make a great case for Jones, Adia Mathes at Iroquois (the front-runner), and Rainey at Warren East.

 

I don't necessarily think Mathes gets a pass because she's going to UK; just that she's outstanding, and probably a half-step better than the other two front-runners.

Not to toot my own horn too much, but I pay reasonably close attention to girls hoops across the state. I've heard her name only a couple times, and never as a serious Miss Basketball candidate.

 

Gimme her resume -- why does she deserve it over the three I mentioned (who are the consensus front-runners)?

The concensus front runners are Mathies and Rainey.

 

It isn't close with those two compared to the Jones kid. She is a good high school player but the other two kids are waaayyy better players.

Read carefully my previous comments. I have been asking why she is not in the conversation, and what is the criteria to be considered? I'll be the first to admit that I haven't seen all the contenders play. With that being said, the ones I have seen are usually held in check by Ms. Tolliver and she is not held in check by any of them. :idunno: Please help me understand. I would say Tolliver's performance in the state tourny last year probably hurt her. In addition, some of the hype from Miss Basketball comes from AAU. If Tolliver is to be considered, I'd say this week is crucial. She must put Simon Kenton on her back and carry them in spectacular fashion. To see what that special week can do, look no farther than the player she will see in the first round, Kendall Noble. Noble's state tourny last season gave her exposure to a lot of people that might never see her play otherwise. It's the biggest stage for girls basketball and thus far Tolliver hasn't left much of an impression. Yet, obliviously one game does not make a career, and she's a special player. I just think that her performance in state last year goes into the equation, which I think was your question.

This is very true. Miss KY Basketball will be judged not only for individual performance but team performance and this has to happen against the state's top teams.

 

I'm not saying Simon Kenton didn't play a tough schedule, only that their success left unanswered questions against ranked teams. Fair or not, Miss KY Basketball will be evaluated on helping her team beat the best unless her past statistics are phenomenal (ex: Ashley Rainey).

 

The final BGP top 20 includes the following teams that Simon Kenton played:

#2 Elizabethtown

#9 Rockcastle Co.

#12 Butler

#17 Highlands (twice)

--Against these teams, SK had a decent 3-2 record; two of the three wins came against #17 Highlands.

--Note: I'm not saying Notre Dame, Newport CC, and other teams SK played weren't good, only that they weren't top-ranked which often draws statewide attention necessary for Miss KY Basketball votes.

 

I am not aware if Tolliver was able to shut down Natalie Greenwell and Jones of highly ranked E-town, but that would be noteworthy.

 

The good news is she gets her chance in the Sweet 16. If SK makes the Final Four (and I think they have a good chance with these brackets), she will be up against the best. If it's Iroquois and Tolliver can defend and stop Mathies without turning the ball over, then she will certainly join the conversation. Of course, I'm hoping it's CAL instead :thumb: even though it's a tough path.

 

Also, did the SK wins against the other teams come in the last half of the season when the best teams seem to rise to the top? Example: Lexington Christian, slow December-->fantastic February and early March.

Im sorry, my above post came off worse then I intended. Tolliver hasn't really drawn any consideration because outside of the 8th region (and the northern Kentucky area) Tolliver is an unknown. She hasn't done a lot to help herself by way of exposure (at least I dont think). I'm not sure she plays AAU ball or attends any of the recruiting camps. Simon's only shot on the big stage last year, Tolliver may have had her worst game in two years. Her numbers aren't extraordinary either. Don't get me wrong, 20ppg and 5rpg are nice stats, but they don't make her stand out either. A lot of kids score 20 a game (and the best scorers are even over 30) so that's not helping her cause. As far as the defense thing goes, that is a lot harder to judge. A good defender is a lot of times "unoticed" by the large majority who may only see SK once or twice a season. If I'm not mistaken Ponzer usually draws the toughest defensive assignment for SK (at the guard position anyway). I know Ponzer was on Greenwell when they played E-Town.

 

Anyway to sum, she really hasn't done herself any favors by not playing AAU ball or trying to get her name out there through camps or other areas. Her high school stats don't really make her stand out among the others either. When you combine all that with the low coverage girls high school sports get anyway, it's easy to see why Tolliver isn't recognized as one of the top few players across the state.

Most of those games were early in the season but they did beat Highlands twice during their current 17 game winning streak.

I think she played on the same AAU team as the girls from LexCath, Mitchell, Martin, Clifton, also Fothergill. I heard that there was a lot of interest from D-1 teams earlier but she does not want to go far from home.

 

Maybe someone closer to the situation will chime in?
