Cocoa Beach

Playing ball is Cocoa is far from a vacation for the kids. Maybe for the parents but not for the kids.

When I went we played anywhere from 4 to 7 games a day and practiced at night. The weather was HOT. We were on the field every morning by 6:30 warming up for our first game of the day.

I actually ended up going to the hospital on day 3 because I was dehydrated.

The competition is great though and really gives the teams that are fortunate enough to go an upper hand on the local competition.

MBW, surely you mistyped..."4 to 7 games a day". That would be a season worth of games if you played all week at that rate.

7 may be a little high, but when I went (2000) we played atleast 4 games a day.

You must have had one heckuva lot of pitching on your team. I would venture to say that 95% of most high school teams would have totally shot their pitching by the end of the second day (8 games).

7 games a day is obviously not something that happened.

You broke all kinds of rules then.

7 games a day..wow..you would play at 7,9,11,1,3,5 and 7pm...long day:laugh:

The facilities at the expo need to be upgraded, but it is a good opportunity to play a lot of games. I agree it's definately not a vacation for the players or the coaches at all. They stay in dorms and it's all baseball, all the time. Definite advantage for teams that go though. Especially early in the season when it's hard to get games in due to weather here in the state.

Above is a link to how many games Ballard played at Cocoa in 2002. 5 games(total, not in one day) for the entire tournament. On day one they played a doubleheader and that was the only day they played more than one game per day.

Most of the teams play two games a day while down there, with a day off to visit with their families. Although some of the games are looked at or labeled as "JV" games. :ylsuper:

Looking very forward to the Boyd Town Square Bank Derby Classic as over the years the games have been great, the food outstanding and we are treated very, very well by Boyd.....

You will be serving the Bar-b-que again won't you? It is indeed to die for!

I think there actually was a barbecue fatality last year. :puke:

I believe what they were trying to state was that schools like Boyd and larger school take Freshman, JV and Varsity teams.(Well, at least used to). With the three teams combined there might be some days that total 7 games for all three teams involved. Some kids will play on 2 of the squads. I dont think there are enough schools that go to Cocoa anymore to get 7 games in a day. Cocoa Expo is losing a few schools per year to other areas of Florida and other states.
