Final from the 29th. SO wins their third district title in school history.

 

South led by 24 at one point, but North fought back and made it a very interesting finish!

If anyone knows the Trimble County players that made the all tournament team, please post that information. I did not hear that info.

I was there for the first half, and during that time, South had North looking confused. They threw several defenses at them that seemed to really slow them down. In fairness to North, they also missed quite a few close shots. It was 12-10 at the end of the 1st and 35 - 18 at the half. North had held Foley and St. Julian in check. South got a BUNCH of open looks at the 3-point shot in the first half.

 

From the looks of the final box, North couldn't keep Jackson in check. He finished w/ 28 and could have been more, as he missed a few free throws in the first half. I'm thinking by the end of the game that "daddy's boy" (at least that's what it sounded like the North student body was chanting when Jackson went to the line in the first) was having the last laugh.

 

Also, Kramer didn't play for South.

 

Should make for a an interesting regional tourney.

 

Congrats to both schools.

Sorry to be absent so long, folks, I was brutally tired when I got home last night, and have spent all day today coaching my two rec teams and helping to run a Little League tryout session...

 

Most impressive game I've seen from South this year. The Dragons played the most solid defense I've seen from them, and introduced some new twists that North handled very poorly early on.

 

North actually took a 12-10 lead at the very end of the first quarter on a layup by Alex Foley, but South dominated the second period, 25-6. The Dragons got some open looks beyond the arc - Jacob Adams had two huge threes for them - that got them going, and the Mustangs simply looked confused as South repeatedly changed defensive looks that kept NO off-kilter.

 

Keep in mind, South was doing this all without top scorer Drew Kraemer, averaging 18+ ppg.

 

By the middle of the third period, the lead had ballooned to over 20, and it was still 20 when we headed to the final period. Frankly, it looked as if NO was done, IMO, but to their credit, the Mustangs fought back, scoring over 30 points in the final frame.

 

The Dragons helped the Mustangs' cause by rushing shots too early in their possession, and when they missed, NO got the ball back quickly.

 

The lead, however, was simply too big for the Mustangs; they cut the lead to 3, but could not get any closer. South quit throwing up quick shots, forcing the Mustangs to foul, and Austin Bowling killed any NO rally hopes by hitting free throw after free throw.

 

South really impressed me in this tournament. We saw better defense from the Dragons than we've seen in a while, and in the first round win over Oldham County, we saw the Dragons win in a "grinder" game, also something that hasn't been a South forte. And the passion the Dragon players played with in the final was very impressive.

 

Casey Jackson was unconscious...he repeatedly stuck daggers into the Mustangs' hopes. North struggled to find the South shooters all night, as South got lots of open looks beyond the arc.

 

For the Mustangs, freshman Devon Rowan was a beast on the glass. When he was in there, nobody got close to a rebound.

 

This was South's third district title ever, and the first time the school swept the district.

 

In light of South's victory over Shelby County this year, their victory over North, and North's near-win over Anderson at Anderson...this region may be more interesting than thought by most.
