bb823 Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Has the 9th Region named their player(s) of the year yet? Coach of the year? Or is it too early?
Eta Rho Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I think there's usually more than one POY. Pretty sure there's a POY for each division, a coaches POY, and then a 9th region POY that is recognized at Rupp.

At least not in recent years. It seems like they try to spread them around to the top players in the region.

Eta Rho Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 According to the following link: http://www.kypost.com/content/sportsandscores/story/Boehmker-Holmes-Boys-Dominate-Area-All-Star-List/FLaemw8NrUyvBMv09gr4ZQ.cspx DI POY- Ricardo Johnson (Holmes) DII POY- Matt Geisler (Newcath) DIII POY- Joe Flanigan (Calvary Christian) Defensive POY- DI- Ricardo Johnson (Holmes) DII- Brian Volpenhein (Holy Cross) DIII- Chase O'Keefe (Calvary Christian) These awards were voted on by the coaches. The 9th region POY and Coach of the Year will be voted on after the district and region tournaments are completed.
loubballfan Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I would think that McFarland from Boone CO. should get some looks for 9th region POY. No question the the Holmes kids are good but they are surrounded by a lot more talent and Boone has had a heck of a year with McFarland usually leading the way.

No question the the Holmes kids are good but they are surrounded by a lot more talent and Boone has had a heck of a year with McFarland usually leading the way. Ricardo Johnson is hands down the best player in nky....and yes that includes Pittman as well. Ricardo has done more than Mcfarland to date, leading Holmes to 7 wins over top 25 teams, including the current #1 team in the state, Scott Co. Mcfarland and Boone have only beaten one top 25 team, and while it was Holmes, it's tough for COACHES to put Mcfarland ahead of RJ considering all he's accomplished this year. As good of a year Boone has had, Holmes has had an even better year. Boone has a lot more talent surrounding Mcfarland than you think though.
loubballfan Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 But didn't McFarland outplay him head to head and he is also in the top of NKy in a variety of statistical categories (steals, assists, etc) and he does a lot of the little things to make Boone better. Also, I think there a lot of guys on Holmes squad who have contributed to their quality wins and can you actually say Rico was more important than Pittman most of the year? Point is, Holmes is loaded and I think Boone depends a lot more on McFarland this year and he has responded.

Very legit points, but in all honesty, Rico has been much more consistent the whole year againt top teams, hence him getting the award and Mcfarland being the THIRD leading vote getter....that let's you know that the COACHES think both Pittman and Rico are much more important to Holmes' success than Mcfarland is to Boone's success.
wildcatfan Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 McFarland's McDonald's All American nomination is also a pretty high honor. Wasn't he the only one in the 9th region nominated?
bigmarc78 Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 McFarland's McDonald's All American nomination is also a pretty high honor. Wasn't he the only one in the 9th region nominated? Yes, I believe he was the only one from the 9th nominated, but Ricardo Johnson and Elijah Pittman could not be nominated as for they are only juniors.

Very good points ER. The Coaches see and know alot more about the players then the fans do. I just hope Boone and Holmes get another shot to square off.
