If he cares about making money as an actor, he should care if people like him. And yes, he should even care what I think about him.

Well, I disagree (like you expected otherwise.) The man is an absolutely phenomonal actor. He's made some outstanding films, and while may not be "money makers", they are many that are critically acclaimed, which will still ensure he gets paid good money to make future films.

As for me, I don't watch films or listen to music based upon what I think of an artists' political views. I appreciate the craft, and understand that they (the artists) are people, citizens of America, and enjoy the same rights as I.

I think the money I spend off sets the money you don't, so it's a wash, and he'll still be just fine.

So you like his political views and you were fine with him making a political statement at an event that is as you say should be about his work and not his political views?:idunno:

Succintly, yes.

The problem didn't arise in his acting. It arose in his need to impose his politics on the public in a purely entertainment forum. He should have stuck to the purpose of the evening and not been so self-absorbed as to turn it into his own private political platform.

Is there a rule against him speaking of politics in his speech?

Could we work on that?

I suspect that if an actor got up and said what you wanted to hear politically, there'd be no denouncing an entertainer using that platform to make his/her statement.

And your suspicions would be unfounded.

Suspicions are unfounded. A founded suspicion is a fact.

Is that you, Joaquin?

I'm starting to think so. Can we just go to the clip? :isurrender:

I have no problem with his speech considering the role he won for. When he won for "Mystic River" his speech was void of politics. Plus his first comments were priceless!

How funny! He's one of my absolute all-time favorites! I shoulda known! :D

Joaquine Phoenix will be later known as a genius! He is totally living an alternate reality.

Phoenix wasn't in the Oscars...it was Ben Stiller.

She didn't say he was. She was just commenting on the way Phoenix (who was later portrayed by Stiller at the Oscars) acted on the Letterman Show. There is a rumor going around that he is just pretending to act crazy while his brother-in-law films him for a "mock-umentary" to be released in the future.
