3wishes Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Does anyone collect them? I have been collecting them since 2005. I have 23 of them currently. Better yet, does anyone have any that they want to sell? I love going to antique stores in the Louisville area, it makes my day to walk by a case and see a glass I don't already have. The last time I was in Louisville, 2 weeks ago I left Shively with 4 new additions and a dog. But that is another story. Once I get the majority of the 1960's to current KY Derby Glasses, I'll start looking for the rare ones with errors on them and maybe start collecting the Preakness and Belmont or the 22K KY Derby glasses because from 1938-till the sixties will be very hard to find and very expensive to afford. It would be nice to know that someone else collects these. Anyone?
Getslow Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I have one of each going back to 1974. The Kentucky Derby Museum sells a guide with all of the glasses in it including special descriptions of rare/mistake glasses and a current price listing. It's a nice book.
3wishes Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 1974 is my earliest right now, I am bidding on a 1955 and a 1969 glass currently on ebay.
Getslow Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Hopefully there will come a day when I can add to my collection by doing just what you're doing. All of mine prior to about 1996 were given to me by my grandfather and I don't have the disposable income to enhance the set at this point, but I'm definitely going to continue getting the new one every year. Do you have the yellow and red monstrosity from two years ago? I almost hate having that thing on the shelf.
3wishes Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 I assume you are speaking of the 2007 and yes, not flattering but to me just about all of the glasses during the 90's are so BLAH and boring, no artistry at all as compared to the earlier ones. The 2009 glass will be favorite of them all I feel like, I haven't stopped in Lexington to get one yet but I've seen pictures and it looks sweet.
Getslow Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I remember hearing that a whole group of people in the marketing office lost their jobs over the 2007 logo and color scheme. How anyone thought that yellow and red made something that was visually pleasing is beyond me. I actually hadn't seen the 2009 glass yet. You're right, I like it much more than most of those done in the 10-plus years I've been collecting. I will say that the "135" is a little too prominent.

She also has some from the period when she used to attend the Derby and Oaks. I only have one for my birth year.
NobizLikeShowbiz Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I have a couple, but never really thought about collecting them. Pretty neat idea, though. :thumb:
bugatti Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I always come back with 10 or so and give a few of them away as presents/collectables.
3wishes Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 Of the 20 some odd glasses that I have bugatti, I've been to the actual Derby 3 times, all 3 times I had collected and rummaged about 10 each year from the infield, however, each year I come home empty handed. I've yet to get a glass from one of the years I've been. Ironic.
All Tell Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I've got a bunch, I think the earliest I have is 1972. I got that one from my Grandfather.
98NCCalum Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Wow, I can't believe I'm not the only one on here that collects them. My grandpa got me into horse racing and when he passed I was given his collection. I have some very old ones, and all of them from 1980 on. I will post some of my older ones when I get home, I don't have my list on hand. The 127 yard sale is a great place to pick some up, BTW.

Freebird23 Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 There is an antique mall by the Florence Mall that has a great selection of them. They seem to be reasonably priced... consingment shop set-up. If your interested PM me and I will give directions. I would think it would be worth the trip to N kY...
