Pirate Pride Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I just want to express my gratitude and pleasure with the coaching staff, administration, and anyone who was involved in putting together Belfry's schedule for this upcoming football season. Not only do I think the playing the likes of Whitley Co. (who is up), LCC, and Ashland help prepare the young Pirates for the eventual tough fights deep in the playoffs, but it also makes for some exciting and intriguing games for the fanbase! Throw in games against Prestonsburg, Pikeville, Johnson Central, and district rival Sheldon Clark and you get a solid/challenging schedule. Again, kudos to anyone who had a part in the process!
WideTackle6 Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 That's a solid looking schedule. It should be fun following Belfry this year. Is Whitley County the Pike County Bowl game by any chance?
Watusi Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 No, Boyd Co is the PCB game. Whitley is a 2 year home/home series. Should be a good matchup.
oneijoe Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 The Colonels are usually a well coached team that plays fundamentally straight up who rarely beat themselves. I really enjoyed the Whitley Co./P-burg matchups a few years ago...
WideTackle6 Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I get to see Belfry play about one game a year. I love every minute of it. It's FOOTBALL.
Watusi Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Judging by your username, you would have loved them in the late 70's and early 80's. Who do you watch on a regular basis?
Watusi Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 (edited) I agree with Pirate Pride, this is a good schedule. It will be a challenging schedule too for the rebuilding Belfry squad from the opening whistle. I'm doing some educated guessing here, but after looking at the scheduling grid and comparing some of our opponents schedules from last year, here is what I think the schedule may look like. Week 0 - 2A Prestonsburg - Away Week 1 - 4A Boyd Co - Pike Co Bowl (either Home or at Shelby Valley) Week 2 - 5A Ashland - Home Week 3 - 5A Letcher Co Central - Away Week 4 - 5A Whitley Co - Home Week 5 - OPEN Week 6 - 1A Pikeville - Home Week 7 - 3A Pike Central - Away Week 8 - 3A Sheldon Clark - Home Week 9 - 3A East Ridge - Away Week 10 - 5A Johnson Central - Home The Ashland, Letcher and Whitley games I am not sure of. They could be in any order in those weeks and I could have the location wrong on any or all of them. So this is just for discussion purposes and not official. As with most Belfry teams, you had better beat them early in the season if you are going to beat them because they start slow and improve by the end of the season. That being the case, the early season is loaded with good competition. Prestonsburg knows Belfry very well and this is smart scheduling on their part. They are playing Belfry at the right time in week zero. Giving up a scrimmage to travel to Prestonsburg in week zero is not the ideal way for a young team to start out the season. It will be a tough test. I can't wait. Following that up with four 5A schools, two from the Ashland area and the two best teams in D8 is a rough stretch of road. The OPEN week will be a blessing. And then with Sheldon Clark and Johnson Central at the end of the gauntlet there will be no rest for the weary, lol. This will be a lot of fun for the fans and big time challenge for the coaches and players. They should be really battle tested come playoff time. GO PIRATES!!! Edited February 8, 2009 by Watusi Boyd Co is 4A, not 5A

Maybe wrong, but I dont think them and Ashland are in the same class.

oneijoe Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 (edited) ... Prestonsburg knows Belfry very well and this is smart scheduling on their part. They are playing Belfry at the right time in week zero. Giving up a scrimmage to travel to Prestonsburg in week zero is not the ideal way for a young team to start out the season. It will be a tough test. I can't wait. ... Prestonsburg typically starts its seasons just as poorly. And like the Pirates, Prestonsburg will also be rebuilding - >90% of the its offensive production graduated. Rather than some kind of "plan" to catch the Pirates at the right time, this is probably the only place the teams' schedules would allow it to happen. It's obvious BOTH teams want to resume the game given the scrimmage forfeitures. I suspect we'll see a defensive game filled with turnovers, busted plays, and missed assignments. But I also expect a lot of hard hitting and PLENTY of emotion on both sides. The two teams hate losing to the other just a little more than losing to anyone else (district foe or not). :thumb: Edited February 8, 2009 by oneijoe
Watusi Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 No, its an evil plan by Prestonsburg and you can't change my opinion. Truth is, I actually posted that with anticipation of your response, oneijoe.

Truth is, I actually posted that with anticipation of your response, oneijoe. Belfry is the EVIL EMPIRE. No one should forget that. They'll steal your coach. And they're adept at marketing their Deathstar school to 6 foot, 225 pound Mingo Co. 8th graders who "want a better education". Even residents call Belfry "the" football school of Williamson (WV). :deadhorse: How bout that for a response ?
Pirate Pride Posted February 22, 2009 Author Posted February 22, 2009 I just look forward to seeing the Deathstar unleashed against the Blackcats in week 0.
Coupon21 Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Boyd County I believe is 4A. Maybe wrong, but I dont think them and Ashland are in the same class. BC is 4A but Ashland is 5A.
