Newman Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Well it only took 3 weeks for the new president to increase taxes on those he promised not to raise taxes on. $.61 cent per pack raise in the excise tax on tobacco. Does anyone making less than $250k smoke? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090205/ap_on_go_pr_wh/children_s_health_glance;_ylt=Agn1kjqOBFN0imwMoXFD0nSyFz4D

After 8 years of neglecting this country and spending all of our money in Iraq and Afghanistan, I can't see any alternative. If you believe what any politician says, then you are just kidding yourself.

Lucky Charms Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 You had better get used to being taxed more. After 8 years of neglecting this country and spending all of our money in Iraq and Afghanistan, I can't see any alternative. If you believe what any politician says, then you are just kidding yourself. The fact is, they could keep the taxes the same and try to reduce the out of control spending that is going on in Washington with the Republicans (then) and the Democrats (now).
Lucky Charms Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Quit smoking and you don't have to worry about it. Then how are we going to fund SCHIP?
Guest Bluto Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 After 8 years of neglecting this country and spending all of our money in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now THAT's funny! (and sad, at the same time) I can't see any alternative. Of course you can. They should do what you and I have to do when we run out of money: set spending priorities, and then STOP SPENDING ANY MORE!
Newman Posted February 5, 2009 Author Posted February 5, 2009 Quit smoking and you don't have to worry about it. I would have to start first. Interesting though that Obama promises to cut taxes on the middle class and one of his first move is to raise a tax that will effect quite a few people in the middle class. Keeping hidding behind the "he has no choice" arguement. Bottomline is he lied on the campaign trail.
Clyde Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 There won't be much sympathy here from either side of the spectrum. Stop smoking - put more money in your pocket - live a healthier life - lower health care costs for all.

I am no where close to an Obama supporter but raising the tax on tobacco is not a tax on the middle class. It is a tax on anyone who chooses to buy tobacco products. He is actually taxing himself since Obama smokes like a freight train.

If you smoke and your in the middle class then your taxes that you pay just increased.

But, you don't have to smoke. So, if you quit, you don't pay the tax. Plus, you save money by not buying cigarrettes, potentially lower your healthcare costs, and insurance premiums. This could actually save a middle class smoker this way.

All you have to do is not buy a house so you don't pay real estate taxes; not stay in a hotel to avoid hotel taxes; not pay a gas or electric bill to avoid those taxes; not buy any clothes to avoid paying sales tax; not have a phone so you don't pay those taxes; not have a car so you don't pay personal property tax, car insurance taxes or gasoline taxes; and not make a decent living to avoid income taxes. Last time I checked air is free....for now.

Nobody needs to smoke, people need shelter, people need heat, people need clothing, people need transportation, people need to make a living, nobody NEEDS to smoke and as a matter of fact people NEED to NOT smoke. A middle class smokers' taxes will not go up, but the tax on cigarettes will.
Fastbreak Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 SO... I'd like to point out the 500 lb gorilla in the room... How are we going to maintain funding on what is the newest government entitlement program when everyone quits smoking and there's no more cigarette taxes to be collected?
