Just got back from the game. It was nice sitting with old freinds,(Hatton Family) that I have known for years. Holmes was way to big and dominated for most of the game. Good win for the Dawgs and can't wait until Friday and Sat. Good job Brandon!!! :thumb::notworthy:

Sounds like Holmes looked good Dawgs. Sadly I was at work and didn't have the chance to attend. I figured they'd be on in the first game back after the Scott scare.

First quarter Holmes came out sluggish for the first few minutes and found themselves down 7-6 at the 4 minute mark, but that would be the only lead Dixie would have the whole game. Next time down the floor for Holmes Riley found Pittman for a nice two hand alley oop dunk that would key an 11-0 run for the home team. Dixie got down 19-8 but scored the final 3 points of the quarter to end the quarter with Holmes up 19-11.

 

Second quarter Rico opened up the quarter on a personal 6-0 run with back to back 3's in less than a minute to give Holmes a 25-11 advantage. Dixie then went on a run of their own to get the lead down to 25-17 but the next possession for Holmes, JJ found brother Rico down low for a HARD two hand dunk which keyed a 9-0 run for Holmes to put them up 34-17 with 2:58 left until the half. Dixie would score 4 of the last 6 points of the half and head in to the locker room down 36-21. Pittman didn't play at all in the second quarter due to foul trouble.

 

Third quarter Dixie came out playing tough and went on an 8-3 run to get cut the lead to 10 at 39-29 but that would be as close as the game would get in the second half. With Holmes up 40-29 JJ got the ball at the three point line on the baseline off an out of bounds play, drove the baseline and threw it down hard with two hands to give Holmes a 42-29 lead with 2:22 left in the quarter. Both teams traded baskets after this, and we'd head in to the 4th with Holmes leading 44-31.

 

Fourth quarter was all Holmes. Within the first 3 minutes, Holmes had extended their lead to 56-38 with 5 minutes to play. Pittman went to the bench at the 4 minute mark after picking up a technical foul and Dixie knocked down a 3 on their next possession to close within 15 but Holmes ran away with the game after this. With a little over 3 minutes to play and Holmes up 58-44, they'd then close the game on an 11-2 run to give you the final of 69-46. JV played the last two minutes of the game.

 

For Dixie Pompilio is a solid player. Not great and not the most athletic of players but does everything quietly and actually does well around the rim. Pike is a player and scored several times over Pittman, fading away, but the kid needs to hit the weight room hard. I know he's only a freshman but there were several times when he was guarding Rico down low, and Rico just bullied and pushed him around while scoring over top of him. Also needs to hit the boards harder. He was bigger than I thought and is actually around 6'5. He was every bit as big as Rico.

 

For Holmes it was the Riley/Rico Johnson show. Both did pretty much whatever they wanted with the ball and scored at will. JJ did very well on the boards and had a few "man" rebounds where he just out muscled everyone and then got the stick back. Housely continues to attack the rim well and get to the line. Pittman had a few nice blocks including one where his hand was above the square and he just grabbed the ball one handed out of mid air. Think Kenyon Martin a few years ago and you'll get the point.

 

All in all a solid win for Holmes but they still have to get better defensively. A few mental lapses gave Dixie baskets that they shouldn't have gotten. On a side note, I was surprised to see Henley play zone tonight for a few minutes in the fourth quarter.

Lol you say you know he's just a freshman, but then you expect him to not get pushed around by one of the best athletes in NKy. I don't think Zeke will have any trouble putting on some muscle as he gets older.

I'm hoping it was not running his mouth or arguing with officials, because it seems like he has a problem with that. What else could it be? Wish Eta would come back and tell us.

He has ran his mouth all season, and if he is just now getting a tech for that, that is crazy. Nothing wrong with a little jawing. But if it is aimed at the officials that is another story. If it was a hard foul, then thats basketball.

What was the Pittman technical? And his foul trouble. Seems like it is easy to get Pittman into foul trouble.

 

I believe the technical was when he was guarding Pike. Pike picked up his dribble and couldn't go anywhere so he just lowed his shoulder and plowed in to Pittman and a foul was called on Pittman. Pittman and Pike kind of jawed back and forth and then the technical was called.

 

A technical should have also been called on #32 for Dixie though as well. While both teams were standing at half court during the shots Pittman was standing there and #32 (who was MAYBE 6'2) turned around and came and got in Pittman's face and then pushed him...full extension. The ref was standing right there but did nothing. It was only Pittman's third foul but Henley pulled him to keep anything from escalating.

Pike and #32 were running their mouths to Pittman the WHOLE night and there were a few times where fouls were called on them for TRIPPING Eli while he was trying to get through screens. Pike also had 2 fouls called on him for throwing elbows in to Pittman.

So they got under his skin which he has done to so many others this season. Henley did the right thing getting him out of there though, you don't want to lose a stud because of some non-sense when you have the game well in hand. Eli has to learn that if he can dish it he has to take it though. The Bulldogs can't afford to lose him over things like that, had this have been the Paintsville game from last year down state @ Rupp and he had reacted like that it could have been a full scale riot, that was the most physical high school game I have ever seen.

If I am a coach scouting Holmes, I tell my guys to give it right back to Pittman. It seems like he can dish it out but has trouble when it comes back at him. I think you can get in his head.

I've yet to see him or hear about him doing it in a game that was close. It seems like when his head gets out of it (ie easy wins) is when he gets a little out of control.
