Raceland was in complete contol in this one for 3 qtrs, Russell opened the 4th qtr. with 4 consecutive threes to take a one point lead. The rest of the game was back and forth, Racelands Cody Barker hit a shot to break a 45-45 tie and was fouled with 4 seconds left, Barker hit the free throw to comlete the Rams three point win over Russell.

This was an excellent 4th qtr. comeback by Rusell to make this one close. Kudo's to the Russell kids for playing hard and not quitting, the Red Devils are very young and definately have the potential to be a very good basketbal team in the future, they imo have greatly improved this season. :thumb:.

I am not sure on the stats but I believe that T. Boyles ended up with somewhere around 22-24 points while C. Barker had 13 - 15, not sure.

Way to go Rams!! Congrats on another regular season sweep of the rival Red Devils. :ylsuper:

Congratulations to the Rams, keep working.

Russell has definitely improved over the course of the season, the district tournament is going to be interesting.

I've only seen them once, but it seems that from what I've read here on BGP, this is a trend for Russell - get in a pretty deep hole early, claw back via the 3-pointer.

This one was similar to the Greenup-Russell game on Friday night. Russell got behind big and then looked like a completely different team in the 4th quarter. If nothing else, it definitely makes for good entertainment and turns the atmosphere a little hostile by the end! :-)

Raceland's Tyler Boyles is a very good player. He was head and shoulders above everyone else on the floor. For whatever reason, he didn't seem to shoot a lot in the 2nd half, though. I believe Raceland would be better off just spreading the floor and letting him go 1 on however many the other team chooses to put on him. It worked on the final play of the game as it took about 3 Russell guys to contain Boyles and he found a player wide open for the winning layup.

I could see Raceland perhaps surprising some of the more talented teams in the region if Boyles comes out and goes for about 40.

As for Russell, I still believe they are capable of pulling off a surprise themselves as during their "comebacks" against Greenup and Raceland, they have 5 guys on the floor that can make 3's. That can be dangerous when they start hitting like they did in the 4th quarter tonight.

Lastly, I agree with Russell's radio announcer who said at the end of the game that the students and fans should come out and support this team. They do give quite an effort and are very fun to watch. In one or two years, they are going to start winning some games and that is going to be all the more gratifying because of what they are going through now.

I cetainly agree Ram, imo any one of the four teams could possibly win it. Raceland has to cut down on the turnovers and mental msitakes, the Rams had more than their share of both tonight.

As for the district tournament, I would have to say that Greenup is the favorite. I think they have the most collective talent of any of the teams. As I said, though, Boyles is the kind of player who is capable of winning a game by himself...and Lewis County has proved to be tough at times as well...and if Russell is hitting their 3's...I guess you're right! It is going to be the best district tournament in awhile. :-)

Wouldn't you know it, the first year that we seed the tournament, and all the teams are basically the same.

I was thinking about the crowd support and I have to post a little more about it...

Whatever happened to the days where schools would have big student sections at these local rivalry games like this??? Is school spirit out of style these days?

Back when I was in school, Russell would have one corner of the gym filled up and Greenup would have the opposite corner filled up. Each side would be trying to outdo the other throughout the entire game. That really made for a fun environment.

As I looked around at both of these games at Russell the past couple of nights, both sides of the gym (Russell, Greenup, and Raceland) seem to have more adults cheering loudly than students. I just wondered if there are any schools in our area that still have the tradition of a student section?

That topic may be worthy of its own thread. Not trying to threadjack, but there's been a HUGE dropoff at Mason County in this regard. There is still a small group of loyal student supporters, but nothing like the past several years.

The difference in the 2 teams is simple. Raceland has Tyler Boyles, Russell does not. He can play. He's under control, he's long and he can score when he wants to. Fun game to watch. Congratulations to the Rams.
