In fact, I heard that comment and came to the conclusion all by myself that it is stupid to build/re-build the country's infrastructure with unskilled, long-term unemployed labor. There is usually a reason that the long-term unemployed are unemployed.

 

When you heard the comment how much of the entire response was with it?

It will increase those wages but sounds to me like he only wants to hire minorities to fill the demand that would create. Supply and demand will bring in more workers, that is common sense.

Please don't take this as argumentative - how, then, can we get these people into the work force if we don't want to put them in the workforce in an area that we need people and could possibly provide training? We lament all the time about those that choose NOT to work and look for a handout. Why not put some of those people to work here?

They had a video on one of the news channels yesterday of Tom Reich at an Obama economic meeting on 1/7 (I think that was the date) and he said they needed to make sure all the jobs didn't go to white male construction workers.

Did you see the video link? Again...even with what you are quoting (which is on the video link)...he did NOT say that "white people" should be excluded from the jobs, just they should not be the only ones to get them.

75 - this is the ONLY real point that we can truly debate. Does Reich's claim that spreading the aid to those not in the majority of the workforce today help the economy/(ie us) overall? This other crap about no white guys getting aid is scare tactic 101.

His statement would be considered racist if a conservative had said something like this statement.
