Yes, and it is disturbing. I finally replied to one person who was sending them daily. After a couple he sent yesterday, I finally said, dude, enough is enough already. Haven't heard back and don't care if I do.

Some of the text messages I have gotten over the past few months are really telling. I understand they are jokes, but I just erase them. I have really learned some things from some friends of mine, that I didn't know.

 

 

I used to receive a ton of dumb redneck jokes about "W". Received even more when Quayle was around. Should I have been offended? Or is racism ok when you are running down a white guy?

You are right on. That is one reason that racisim or namecalling will never go away. White folks think its ok to refer to themselves and each other as the R-word, and to many Black folks think that it is ok to refer to themselves and the n-word. Now when each race hears the other using those terms freely and frequently, then there is no reason to stop.

 

The more you ignore the stupidity, the higher likelhood it will go away. But the media would never allow that to happen. The media needs racism to survive.

This has happened to me on numerous occasions. Being bi-racial, I've had many arguments with people when I've said that I was black, and they disagreed. Their argument was that I was just as much white as black, which is correct. However, society sees me as an African-American. The easiest way for me to explain it to those folks is that when I go a white man's house to take his daughter out, he doesn't see me as half-white, he sees me as half-black, or black all together.

 

I've also experienced times when my mother and I (she is white) have been out in public and have gotten many stares. She says that used to happen a lot more when I was younger.

 

I agree that racism is nothing more than ignorance and can happen both ways. Just to give you all a tid-bit from the technical and medical side of things. When you are born in the hospital you take on the mother's race not the fathers. So Duece, when a person says your half anything, you can tell them my mom is white and I am white, just like Obama, who's mom is white. But you can be and there is nothing wrong with being raised as an African- American and should be proud of your heritage no matter what your skin color is.

Redneck is not the only stereotype that exists. There is a difference between a stereotype and racism. Prejudice exists in many forms and against many groups. Should people that are overweight be subjected to jokes? Those that aren't physically attractive? Those that have a big nose?

 

Also, I know MANY people that are white, farmers or labor class that no one would call a redneck because they don't have attributes of that stereotype. Also, do you have to be white to be a redneck?

If someone tells you that they are not racist, I would call them a liar. A human being cannot help making assumptions based on something other than the character of the person. I have a good friend who is black (we worked together). She came to up to Kentucky and we were traveling in a small, rural, all white town. When we stopped to get gas she said, "I'm going to run into the restroom while we're here". I hadn't finished filling the tank til she came out looking a little rattled. I said, "Well, that was quick". She didn't say anything. When we got into the car I asked her what was wrong. She informed me that when she went in & asked where the restrooms were she was told that they were out of order. However as she was approaching the door to go out of the store. A white lady came out of the bathroom and shouted to the clerk that they needed more toilet paper in the bathroom. I was livid when she told me this and said let's go back & I'll go in with you. She wanted to leave so that's what we did.

 

Not to long after the above incident I traveled down to Memphis to work with her. As we went into one of the hospitals I noticed I was the only white person there. I felt somewhat uncomfortable but was never ridiculed or called any names. It made me realize and become more aware of what my black friend tolerated many times while working with me.

 

The above incidents occurred about 5 years ago. My great, great, great grandfather came to America from Switzerland on a boat. So the story goes he fell overboard (I guess thats where I get my grace) and it was a black man who pulled him to safety. I didn't even meet a black person until I was in high school. But I'm proud to say she was my first out of many black friends that I have today. I hate prejudice, discrimination, and racism in any form or fashion.

Very true. Often people play into the stereotypes. I saw that a lot down home in SC.

 

It has always kind of bothered me when my black friends would get SO upset when someone would make a comment to them that could be percieved as racist, but then when they made nasty comments back or just in general, they laughed it off and acted like it was no big deal. Racism goes BOTH ways.
