"Brutal" Bible Trivia Question

Featured Replies

Here's a brain teaser for our Bible scholars. Let's see if anyone can come up with an answer. Here's the question:

The Bible mentions eight specific "massacres," wherein more than (in some cases, many times more than) a dozen people were killed. Can you name these eight massacres, and give the total number of people killed in the events?

This one should keep you busy for a while.

RM - Of course it came from there. ;)

Didn't Sampson kill 1,000 men with the jawbone of a donkey?

I think this would have taken a while...

That's one. :thumb:

Sodom and Gomorrah?

Sodom and Gomorrah?
That's not one. These were committed by mortal humans. Although sometimes by requesting God's intervention.

(If nobody gets close, I'll give you a pretty good clue.)

I will not give the answers because I just looked at this in a study session, but the chapters of Kings and Samuel had a lot of bloodshed...........

David killed 200 Philistines to prove his worth to Saul and marry one of Saul's daughters.

I know Samson killed thousands in Gaza when he pushed the pillars, the bible says there were three thousand on the roof and he killed more in death than in his life. I also know he killed thirty men and took their clothes when the Philistines solved his riddle.

Yep, you've chronicled it pretty well. :thumb:

I know there's one battle where Saul was commanded to kill pretty much everybody, but he disobeyed and left some alive. Was it the Ag?

But, I don't know how many died off the top of my head.

There are four places to look. And three of them have already been mentioned.

The Slaughter of the Innocents.

1. Doeg the Edomite killed 85 priests and all the men, women, children, infants, oxen, donkeys, and sheep with a sword. 1 Samuel 22:18-19

2. Abishai killed 300 men with a spear. 2 Samuel 23:18, 1 Chronicles 11:20

3. Elijah killed 450 religious leaders in a prayer contest. 1 Kings 18:22-40

4. Shamgar killed 600 Philistines with an ox goad. Judges 3:31

You've got #2 & #4. My numbers are different on #3; but otherwise, it's right too. As for #1, I guess it's possible that my book doesn't list them all. So I might be in trouble here. ;)

I should have said this from the beginning; but didn't know it until I looked it up: These are all in the Old Testament.
