I plan on purchasing an Xbox 360 here soon. Seems to me that the graphics are just as good as the PS3's yet it's way cheaper. I don't watch many movies... So the Blu Ray does me no good.

Just bought the PS3 last night, and I paid for it today. Madden and Merlot just don't mix after 5 hours of playing. I have a question about online play, I tried to register for the PS Network but I kept receiving an error message, is this common? As long as I have wireless can I just register and start playing online?

How is NBA? I just played the new COD a few days ago and I was pleasantly surprised. It is awesome.

 

I'm shocked that people prefer the XBOX over PS3. I'm interested to hear what features people prefer that the XBOX has that PS3 does not offer...

Well pretty much everyone tends to think that XBox Live is a better service than PS Network. Usually when that straight answer is given the PS enthusiasts counter that PS Network is free. And that's fine, but Live is still a better service. If you're willing to pay that much extra for a console, it should be no problem understanding why we pay for a better online experience.

 

The 360 has much better game support right now, and looks like they will have that over the lifespan of these consoles. Playstation used to stake their claim with exclusives, but those are far, far fewer now. Metal Gear Solid is still a huge one for Sony, but it is somewhat negated when you look at some that XBox has to offer, the Halo & Gears of War series chief among them. A lot of the game support superiority has come about because developers have actually found it difficult to work with Sony's cell processor. This is a big reason you see such long delays on games with the PS3.

 

A very nice feature that XBox has recently added is the Netflix streaming over the internet. Several 360 owners that I know have taken advantage of this, replacing their traditional Netflix service with this.

 

Of course the biggest advantage is that right now is the cost differential. Most will point out the Blu-Ray but prices have fallen to a point that you can get a 360 and a Blu-Ray for less than a PS3. And that's why you're seeing the PS3 losing the war in this generation, and make no mistake, they're losing the war. Both the Wii and 360 had huge sales increases over the previous year this Christmas, whereas the PS3 fell off from a year earlier, and the message is "IT COSTS TOO MUCH."

My brother has xbox and i havent seen anything that they offer that ps3 doesnt.

 

As far as better service, please explain? I can remember my brother making his annual yearly payment a few weeks ago(on time) and spending an hour on the phone with xbox because they locked his account for non payment.

 

Ps3 network offers downloadable movies and tv shows also. From what i saw with the xbox netflix that my brother had, there weren't a lot of newer releases available. is this true?

I mean, I just explained to you what they offer that PS3 doesn't. If I offer you a better steak than the other guy, I'm offering you something he doesn't. Sure, he's got a steak too, but not the quality that I'm offering. If you're looking for raw hardware or features, then no, for the most part the 360 doesn't offer much that PS3 doesn't have in some sort of a direct comparison outside of specific games.

 

Better service means a more reliable connection and generally more content. I don't know what awful experience your brother has had, but I can tell you that I'm in my 5th year of having XBox Live and I have not once, not one single time had any problem with payment that required me to call XBox Live. The only times I have even had a problem with service has been when Live was down for updates or when Halo 2 or Halo 3 was released and the network was slow or unresponsive for that day.

 

PS3 network has some movies and TV shows, XBox Live has more. I think I remember seeing that the number was in the 10000s on Live. As for the Netflix, I haven't done it yet, so I don't really know. I know that there a whole lot of movies available though.

I think the Xbox 360 network is way better than the ps3, You do have to pay for it, but you get alot more for your buck, plus it is very cheap for a pretty lond period of time.

I'm sorry that the general opinion held by the public at-large that XBox Live has a more reliable connection and more content isn't all that impressive to you. A reliable and non-lagging connection has always been important to me, whether I was gaming on a PC, Xbox, Playstation, or anything. You don't have to accept my statement that Live is better, but I can assure you that general public opinion has agreed with that, though I'm sure there are some on here that don't agree (which I of course assume includes you).

 

Netflix is but one cog of many in XBox Live, just as the ability to download movies from the Playstation Network is one cog of many in it. Let me be clear about something: there is a difference between the two. You can download movies and TV Shows without Netflix on XBox Live. That requires you to download the entirety of the movie or show to your hard drive. The Netflix service is on-demand streaming of the movie you're selecting.

Like how PS3 has Metal Gear Solid 4 and how XBox 360 has Halo 3 and GOW 1 & 2, that sort of thing. The 360 has many, many more games at this point than the PS3.

 

I had a detailed post explaining what I thought were clear advantages of the 360 over the PS3. They are not necessarily features that the 360 possesses that the PS3 doesn't but features that I believe the 360 does better. There are of course things that the PS3 does better than the 360 as well. I don't know what else you want from me other than to make sure I know that you're not impressed with that description. I'd encourage you to tell me just what you think makes the PS3 better. I'm assuming I'll hear Blu-Ray (which I don't want in my system anyway since I prefer to watch that in the family room with my family) and other various hardware features that I don't care the least about (Wi-Fi: I would never play a game on the internet except over a wired connection, Internet Browser: That's why I have a computer) and some I do (Graphics).

I'm not trying to convince you, you said you never got a straight answer from anyone, and I attempted to provide you with one.

 

I will agree with you that Blu-Ray is amazing. I got one for Christmas (I would have bought one otherwise) and have it set up in my family room. Watched the Dark Knight on it a couple of nights later. I have my XBox 360 in my office so that I can play it without tying up the main TV, and so it would do me no good to have a Blu-Ray player back there (i.e. PS3 for the Blu-Ray) because that's not where I'd watch movies.

Thanks for the response, DF. That truly is the 1st time that anybody has ever answered my question as to why they prefer 360 over PS3. I don't think I've ever posed that question on BGP, though.

 

I'm a little unsure why you wouldn't be able to watch Blu-Rays with your family, but I'm assuming it's due to your set up. I must say that the PS3 is a great Blu-Ray Player. I've also downloaded movies off of the internet and uploaded them to my PS3. I do not know if you can do that or not on a 360. I have about 7 or 8 movies on my PS3 that are saved that I can watch at any time.

 

The Internet Browser on PS3 is something that I like. Although it's not great for surfing the web by yourself, it offers some advantages for a large crowd. For example, when my family was over for Christmas, I busted out the PS3 and we watched a few videos on the TV on youtube. Nothing spectacular, but it was enjoyable and it sure beats having a bunch of people hovered around a computer screen or laptop.

 

You can play PS3 online over both a wireless connection or wired connection. In college, I used the neighbor's Wi-Fi to play online and had very few problems with the internet connection; however, I did get kicked off from time to time. But, that was using the neighbor's Wi-Fi. Now that I've got my own set up and my own wireless, I have not had any problems with my internet connection. And the online play has been great.

 

Xbox does probably have more games to offer, but that does not matter to me much. I primarily play sports games & Call of Duty. PS3 still has an ample game selection, and I'd imagine it will continue to expand. The lack of games was an issue a few years ago when the PS3 first came out, but I don't see that as that big of a problem anymore.

 

One of the most enjoyable features that I have found for PS3 is the ability to download game demos & movie trailers / demos. I enjoy that you can download a demo version of virtually every video game, so that you can play it before you buy / rent it. Can you do that on XBOX?

 

FWIW, you can now download movies through the Playstation Network.

I'm trying to update the system settings to go online and after 8-10% I get an error #80710723 message. I googled it up and a few sites said to disable the UpNp and I did but it still doesn't work. I even disabled my laptop from the wireless connection to no avail. Any suggestions?
