December 24, 200817 yr After I get done with this thread some may think I am crazy but I think I am actually going to like my classes and the type of assignments I'll have to be doing. As some know, I am a Journalism major and have been writing game recaps for the NKU sports information department for a couple years now for specific sports that I have been fortunate enough to be assigned to. (I am going to be one to write the golf recaps for the spring season and maybe some softball or baseball ones from time to time) With that having been said, I have taken a liking to writing things in AP style and simply can't write any other way anymore. Four out of my five classes will have me writing papers (LOTS of them) and I actually prefer that over having to take tests...never was a good test taker. My classload for the upcoming semester looks like the following... JOU 230 Newswriting II (TR 1:40 p.m.-2:50 p.m. with Mary Cupito) JOU 296 Practicum: Communication (M 4:50 p.m.-6:05 p.m. with Gayle Brown) JOU 340 Feature Writing (R 12:15 p.m.-1:30 p.m. Michele Day) JOU 346 Copy Editing & Layout (MW 10 a.m.-11:45 a.m. with Mary Cupito) EMB 400 Media Criticism (MW 2 p.m.-3:15 p.m. with David Thomson) Not sure about how many papers I'll have to do for JOU 230 but JOU 296 + JOU 340 + EMB 400 will have me doing a minimum of 22. I have received a preliminay syllabus from all of my professors so this is why I know this information. The total may go up to 24 with those three classes because in the JOU 296 class, the practicum comes along with a choice of a 1 credit hour course or a 2 credit hour course and the only difference between the two for me would be 2 papers. All the papers for this course would have to be deemed as good enough to be printed in The Northerner (our campus newspaper) so it should be a breeze. I think I have finally gotten myself to where things are really starting to look up as far as my classes go after having one of the worst semesters a person could have in the fall of 2007 and yet still be enrolled. I will never let myself get to that point again and vow to work my tail off from here on out because I want to be out of NKU by the spring of 2010. Hopefully after that, I'll be posting on here as an actual, full-fledged sports information director or assistant SID at some college/university.
December 24, 200817 yr Good Luck man. Broadcast/Journalism was my initial major at NKU way back in 1989 and I switched majors because I listened to some bad advice. Graduated with an English degree and teaching cert and only used that 2 yrs. Blogging on BGP has been a decent cure for my Journalism Jonesin but ultimately I might be one of those "non=traditional" students who goes back and gets the degree they gave up on 20 yrs ago. Who knows but my advice to you is stay focused and determined and if its something you love to do then keep chasing that goal. Too many people are in jobs they do not LOVE.

My daughter, a freshman at Georgetown College (3.91 GPA first semester; the apple doesn't fall far from the tree); LOVES to sing. However, some bad experiences in her senior year of high school soured her on music. Fortunately, we talked her into majoring in vocal performance; and she is doing exceptionally well. Mostly because she LOVES it.
December 24, 200817 yr Author I have had a love for sports since I was a kid, I have developed a love for writing about it. I have learned a few things about writing about other topics in my Newswriting I class this semester, but writing about sports is much easier.
December 25, 200817 yr My schedule: ACC 301- Intermediate Accounting I (Jane Wells) ACC 324- Accounting Information Systems (Wei-Chang Shen) ECO 401- Intermediate MicroEconomic Theory (Jeremy Sandford) ECO 402- Intermediate MacroEconomic Theory (Jenny Minier) JPN 102- Begginning Japanese II (Arturo Sajiki-sensee) Sounds fun, right? ACC 301 is an 8:00 am that I am voluntarily taking because I hear she is a better proffessor and I want to have time to work. Agreed with all of the above about doing what you enjoy. My accounting major wasn't exciting me enough so I picked up and economics major as well. I think that Macroeconomics is incredibly interesting (yeah, I'm a dork).

I graduated in 1995 with an English degree. No better Shakespeare teacher then Robert Collier. I also took a course called Sport and Literature which was pretty cool. Other very good professors if they are still there in Eng dept at NKU are L.M Osborne, Tom Zaniello, Peter Schiff.
