Fairview pulls away in the second half in this one after trailing by 3 at the half. Essentially, this one came down to 2 things. Fairview appeared to be taller than Russell at every position on the floor which led to a significant rebounding differential. Also, Russell failed to hit their 3 point shots. It was still a good effort by a young Russell team, though. As I have reiterated, they are going to be fun to watch win or lose and they have the ability to surprise some teams this year if the 3's are falling.

 

Fairview has a couple of very good players in #30 and #32, though. They should be able to play with and probably beat most teams in the region this year with the obvious exception being Elliott County.

Devils led by three at the half 26-23. Too much Evans and Jackson in the second half. Evans is a blue collar player who was the difference in the game.

Collins picked up 2 fouls in the first two minutes and sat the rest of the first half. Stai sat out the second quarter with two fouls and Gehringer picked up three in the first half. The Devils took advantage of this in the second quarter. Taylor and Davidson seemed to give Russell a spark when they came in.

 

Evans never takes a play off, even in practice. He should have a big year.:thumb:

Nice game for both teams, I thought Russell showed alot of grit, my problem was with the way the game was called, Collins and Stapleton both were called for touch fouls early that IMO changed the complection of the game. Then in the 2nd half Russell had so many moving screens Coach Ivan would have been impressed and no calls and Fairview were shoving under the basket there was no way Russell could could board with them even if they had heighth to do so, these were 3 veteran officials who are suppose to know how to control and manage the game an in my humble opinion they did a poor job, I know the replies they are doing the best they can, well so are the coaches and players and they deserve the same competence as the officials expect from them. I don't think the officials changed the outcome of the game but they sure changed the enjoyment of watching it an I'm sure in playing in it. Daryl Smith is a wonderful official in his own right an I believe in time will get the 16th region officials up to par with others thoughout the state as our assigning Secretary but the growing pains are killing the fans only one persons opinion

Russell was only down 4 to start the 4th, so to say they ran away in the 2nd half is misleading. We can whine about the officiating all we want, but when you saw who was coming out on the court for the tip, everyone in the gym knew what they were getting. And you can cry me river about the officiating, it may not have been terrific, but it was even.

 

Russell is fun to watch. And I mean no offense to the last regime, but it was like watching paint dry last season. Coach gets terrific effort out of the kids. I thought Russell made some very costly turnovers in the 4th or the game would have been within a possession or 2.
