Elliott County 89 West Carter 68

Wow--3 hour ride back and trying to get out in a snow blizzard was fun. Cars all along the side of the road along 7 and 519. Had my SUV locked in 4 wheel drive at 25MPH until I got 40 miles and I-64 and it cleared up completely with just a little rain in Morehead.

Now the game. West came in with the mentality that we are going to rough them up and be the intimadator vs. the intimadated. No easy layups as they would take you to a slam fest into the wall. It was a chaotic mess the first few minutes of the game with what I thought was going to be a brawl. Referees had to stop the game and talk to both teams in a love huddle.

Now the positive for West. They are much better than last year's team and took the fight right to Elliott. They also shot the three ball real well. That is the best I have seen a 16th region team play the Lion's over the last 2 years. My hats off to West for taking the fight to our guys. They did not back down. Lions did lead by 29 when the starters went out with 3 minutes left in the game. But it was a long hard hill to get that kind of lead and in fact seemed a little closer than the score actually was. Postive for Elliott--they kept their composure and returned the hard play with more hard determined play of their own. Ferg had 35 points on hustle and determination. If his three ball was going he would have had 45 points. Probably shot 3-10 from trey land which is good, but not for Ferg.

Very good post.

West is alot better then many thought. I thought they played as good as they could and still lost by 21. Ferg played very hard tonight along with the rest of the crew. T. Knipp didnt have a chance tonight I would say he didnt play 7 minutes total and Elliott still won by 21.

In no way is this years West team better than what they had last year. East Carter played Elliott a whole lot closer twice last year than what West ever was tonight. There is a difference in playing someone physical and playing downright dirty and the beginning of the game last night was definitely the latter. I am not a diehard fan of either team but I am less of a fan of West Carter after sitting in some of their fan section and hearing some of the parents and other fans encouraging the West players to take out some of the Elliott players. This is disgraceful and has no place in sports.

That did seem to the mentality of a couple of players, particularly Logan (#5), however, the majority of West's players just played a tough game and tried to make it as physical as possible. The problem was that they are not as strong as Elliott at all and it did not work. As to my earlier post concerning the referees, they allowed it to get carazy in the 1st couple of minutes and after the "love huddle" it settled down some. Two were experienced...Ramey, who did a good job, and Paul Lewis who could not keep up with the pace of play at all. The third guy, whose name I don't know, was younger and made the made some ridiculous calls, including a technical when made the call while standing behind the two experienced officials who had the situation in hand. Elliott held their composure well. West will have a good season. They need to drop the bullying tactics. They are a good enough team without that garbage.

Cooter--I hear you. I was obviously putting the positive spin on it. Really didn't want to get into the negative because I agree with what you are saying. A bunch of people could have got hurt real bad last night was my fear. Timmy was doing good up until this game and got back into his silly freshman and sophomore fouls and only played about 10 minutes and then eventually fouled out with 1:30 left in the third quarter. Being young he got caught up in the frenzy and the foul marathon that was going on. After the first quarter I was beginning to think that West didn't care if the whole starting line-up fouled out along with several Elliott players. Maybe the philosophy was our second team can catch and pass your second team??

I didn't really want to put a negative spin on things but after moving three times and still having the same people end up where I was, saying the things that they said I had a really hard time being positive about it.

It will be a victory if someone can keep a loss to Elliott under 30.

Yeah, a victory in every way except for the team record

After reading through the thread, my thoughts are this:

- these two schools are bitter district rivals that always give 110% against each other

- West Carter sounds as if they came out and tried to get things stirred up a little with hard fouls and intimidation - which is a gameplan I've seen against Elliott before

- West Carter is a little better than thought heading into the season and will challenge East Carter for the 2nd spot in the district, IMO

- Let's not kid ourselves here - Elliott still won the game by 21 points and it would have been worse if they left the starters in a little longer

- Final thought - 16th region officials are terrible (with the exception of a handful), nothing new here

Elliott and West games have always been physical and emotional. Nothing new. I have witnessed fans and players from both sides getting out of control. Sounds like West players have something to prove this year. They will definitely be a team that I wouldn't want to play in March. Does the

62nd seed the district? If so, West and East may be a first round game.

I'm not sure if they seed or draw in this district.

Here's a question for those in attendance, how did Rayburn fare? He seems to be a little under the radar right now. I think he will only get better. Soph I believe.

He Lost.

I thought it was a team event, my bad I didn't realize that it was an individual event. I realize that West Carter the team lost the game to a better opponent. I just was "curious" how a certain player performed against the best competition. Thank you for helping me realize the errors of my ways.

He Lost.

Like school on Sunday!

No, the team lost. I don't know why you chose not to answer the question. Wait a minute, yes I do. Young Mr. Rayburn is going to be a good ballplayer if he is any relation to Brandi . Congrats to Elliott on the win. Those Faulkner boys are really tough.
