The Big Four Classic is what it was called, if memory serves. About 20 years ago.

Good idea but as GT said, would not work out this way being Kentucky always plays Indiana and Louisville and those two are major rivalry games normally played on a Saturday, and usually aired on CBS. If any combination of UK vs. UL/IU would meet up in this tourney format then they would have to play the same team again later on. Or worst of all maybe have to cancel the annual game which would be bad.

 

Another possible snag may be marketing. Sure it is great for us, but with basically the event covering only three states, it wouldn't appear to draw much of a nationwide or even a regional audience. Could be tough to market and sponsorships for in season tourneys don't come cheap.

 

Again, like I said I think its a great idea but far too many snags to keep it from happening. Something I wouldn't mind seeing though keeping basically the same idea and something that would more than likely work would be say a Heartland Classic. Have teams such as UK, Mizzou, OSU, Purdue, WV, Kansas, Memphis, and you could work Cinci in there as well. This way you have a huge slate of quality teams, could make for some great matchups. The best thing about this scenario IMO is that the teams mentioned above represent five different conferences, and no conference features more than two teams. That would work out very well with great out of conference matchups pitting teams who normally do not play against each other. Furthermore, you draw a wider fan base this way, instead of just a couple states, you have basically the whole Hearland of the United States covered, and with the possibilities of such matchups as say Kansas and Memphis, you also have an appeal to the national audience as well.

And it bombed because ND and UK's programs went in the tank and it lost National Interest. On another note, I recall UK and IU fans being the only ones who showed up in droves at the time as being another issue.

NKU's facility is huge! They could make plenty of room for a packed house in there!

You'd have to substitute Miami of OH for NKU.

 

That's what I was thinking. Miami (OH), Dayton, and maybe even West Virginia would all get the nod before NKU.
