They could win it, but they are a long shot. If you are basing your observations on what you saw last year you are the one who lacks experience. haha Also, most of the voters in the attached poll seem to make Carroll the darkhorse.

 

 

 

What else should I base my opinion on? I dont attend Carroll practices or summer league games or whatever else they may play in. The only accurate assesment to give PRESEASON is what they looked like the previous year and who they have coming back. They were an OKAY team last season who lost their best player. I dont see them challenging Simon or Anderson for the 8th title. On a good night they MIGHT be able to compete with the other big schools beacause they are a little down. But I would be the first to tell you that I dont follow Carroll County that closely, just going off my observations of the couple of games I saw them in last season.

 

And I could care less what the poll at the top says. That means absoultly nothing. Just because more Caroll fans vote then any other doesn't make them more of a threat. lol.

FYI--The North Central Kentucky Conference has been around for a long time. The schools that make up the conference are Henry, Walton Verona, Gallatin, Owen, Carroll, Williamstown, and Trimble. Spencer and Eminence were members at one time.

 

The conference sports are football, cross country, golf, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, and academic teams. Other sports such as soccer and track may be added in the future.The conference give recognition to each team and individuals who make the all conference teams. There is a banquet to honor these kids at the end of the season in basketball. The conference gives an all sport award to the school that does the best overall each year. Each school is proud to be a member and this gives them something to play for along with the Class A, District and Regional. Scheduling for each sport is done thru the AD's when they meet periodically.

 

Also, I believe all basketball districts in the 8th region are seeded.

 

Is the 32nd now seeded, too? I know the 29th, 30th, and 31st are...but each handles its seeding in its own way...for example, in the 29th, the teams only play each other once. 3-0 gets you the #1 seed. But in the 31st, each team plays a home-and-home. Creates more excitement on the district level, but (obviously) locks your schedule in more.

magicfan is 100% correct here...I posted this poll for fun, but I sure didn't expect it to be very "scientific". Everyone's voting for their favorite schools - which is admirable, and expected - but if we were all being unbiased, would all of these teams be receiving votes? Surely not.

 

On the other hand, I've seen schools come out of NOWHERE some years. Who would have predicted the 1976-7 Oldham County Lady Colonels, who had NEVER even had a .500 season, and who had never reached the region before? Throw in a new coach (Dave Weedman), a new coaching philosophy, and the same kids went 18-4 that year, won the 31st district over perennial power Trimble County, then won the 8th Region. They then made it to the 2nd round of the Sweet 16 before losing to Assumption.

 

Nobody would have predicted that team's season...

 

You never know. That's why we all love HS sports. If it was predictable, it'd be the NBA and BORING.

 

I see almost every team in the region multiple times every year, and there's no way some of these teams "deserve" votes in this poll IMO...but who's to say? One of these teams may be the next 76-77 Lady Colonels... It's all for fun...we can laugh at each other (and ourselves) come March...

I wasn't slamming Gallatin County. They will have a solid team. They will go as Jones and Balsiger goes. Your statement about returning everyone and the younger kids are stepping up their game can also pertain to the teams I mentioned.

I"m not a "homer" and I voted for Carroll Co.

...and only a few things have changed...

 

Anderson County and Simon Kenton are still the top dogs. Anderson hasn't played as strong a schedule as SK (although the Lady Cats schedule hasn't been soft by any stretch), so they aren't getting the love the Lady Pioneers are deservedly getting in the polls... SK already has wins over Rockcastle County, Conner, and Owensboro Catholic and lost by just 4 to Butler and 8 to Etown...they're proving they belong among the top 20. Anderson's lone loss was to formidable Nelson County, and they did just defeat previously unbeaten Caldwell County. Anderson heads into 2009 on a region-best 5 game winning streak...

 

Shelby is still a factor, but IMO has decidedly dropped out of the top tier. They may be there at the end of the season, but the Lady Rockets don't appear to be any greater threat to AC and SK RIGHT NOW than South Oldham or Carroll County. Still, Shelby is 4-0 as of this writing against 8th opponents. Only SK is also unbeaten against 8th Region competition with a 3-0 mark. But Shelby was probably fortunate to get out of Crestwood with a one point win over South Oldham after committing over 30 turnovers.

 

Carroll County is cementing their spot as a dark house, IMO. The Lady Panthers come out of December with a winning record and competed well with Shelby County early on. They're 5-2 vs. 8th Region opponents...

 

South Oldham has to be thrown into the top 5 IMO, despite a 4-7 mark at this point. South has played a powerful schedule with an incredibly young team (5 of 11 roster players are freshmen, and all play every game) They played Shelby to a basic draw and had powerful Franklin County down by 5 in the 4Q before losing...

 

Spencer County probably fits into the Carroll / Shelby / South tier, with Kenisha Marshall leading the way. Spencer sits with 7 official wins (they also beat the Australian team) vs. 5 losses heading into 2009. But they lost by 15 to Anderson in their first crack vs a region contender... Right now, Spencer's biggest concern is that they must defeat either Anderson or Shelby to get out of the 30th...but this might be the year they catch up with one of them...

 

After that, it's anybody's guess... The story of the region is still it's incredible youth....

Nicole Bryant (FR) leads North Oldham in scoring...

Rianna Gayheart (FR) is a scoring monster at Owen Co., and I believe leads them in scoring...

Trimble County's 8-girl roster has 3 freshmen and one 8th grader...

Eminence has a 13-girl roster...1 SR, 0 JR, 5 SOPH, 6 FR, and 1 8th grader...

Walton-Verona has 3 FR, 3 8th graders, and 1 7th-grader...

Jasmine Whitfield (FR) starts at PG for South Oldham and is the #2 scorer...

Tori Wilhoit (Soph) averages 11.4 ppg and 12.3 reb for Williamstown...

Hannah Devine (FR) leads Carroll County in scoring AND rebounding (10.1 ppg and 6.9 reb)...

 

And countless others are starting or coming off the bench to contribute key minutes for teams...Cyndi Wainscott (SOPH) at Simon Kenton, Emily Melton (FR) at Oldham County, and on, and on...

 

In the 8th All - A... Carroll County might be edging out in front as the favorite right now, but Williamstown, Owen County, and Henry County are all making noise....

...Carroll has split with Owen County...

...Owen has beaten Williamstown by 9, split with Carroll, and lost to Henry by 2...

...Henry has the narrow win over Owen, plays Carroll on 1/6 and Owen on 1/9, and Williamstown on 1/22...

...Williamstown lost by 9 to Owen Co., but is 2-0 vs. other A teams...

Right now I would rank the teams:

 

1. SK

2. Anderson

3. South Oldham

4. Shelby

5. Oldham

 

with Spencer, Carroll, Henry, and Williamstown not too far behind. The big 2 seem pretty safe, Im not seeing anyone jump them baring Injury before the regional tournament, however after those two it appears more wide open then ever.

I had a tough time with question and went with Spencer Co primarily because they have a core group that have been together for 4 years and if they are ever going to make a run, it will be this year. Marshall is a nice post player and I hope that they have a good run this year.

 

I did not go with South Oldham because the players appear to lack the desire and competitive spirit to win the region IMO. They do have talent though, with most of it in the freshman class outside of McGuffin, but simply lack the leadsrship to get the job done unless someone rises to the challenge.

 

I am not so sure about any of the other schools, except maybe Oldham who could have a shot at it. Even with the openess of the region this year, I do not think a dark horse will stand a chance of winning, although I would like to see it happen.

Although I chose Oldham County when I originated this poll before the season, I did so under the assumption that all of last year's underclassmen would return. They did not all return, so the learning curve at OC is proving a bit longer than I previously expected. Today, I would probably rank Oldham a tad below Carroll and Spencer, although the Lady Colonels have been playing a lot better of late.

 

Even with the openess of the region this year, I do not think a dark horse will stand a chance of winning, although I would like to see it happen.

 

Crazy8s, you may be right. I posed the question because, by definition, there's always a potential dark horse out there...but SK and AC have really set themselves far apart from the rest after one month. Still...there's two months of basketball to play...and with all that youth out there, you never know when a team will suddenly come together...

I think Spencer could easily be one of the top 5 teams by the end of the season. However, as previously stated, they have to get by Shelby or Anderson to even make a run.

Alot of those question should be answered Monday. I would expect Shelby to win big but what do I know.

Monday is a big day for the 30th district. IMO, it is a much bigger game for Spencer. If they keep it close or win, it will go a long way come districts.
