Coin toss will decide Western-Atherton 4A

Featured Replies

The third-place tie between the Western and Atherton football teams in Class 4-A, District Three will be decided by a coin toss during Thursday's area athletic directors meeting. Western (2-6, 1-2) and Atherton (1-7, 1-2) did not play this season because their Sept. 19 meeting was canceled because of the windstorm that hit the Louisville area that week.

The winner of the coin toss will be the No. 3 seed and play at North Bullitt in the first round of the playoffs Nov. 14. The loser will be the No. 4 seed and play at Bullitt East in the first round.

Why is the KHSAA allowing Western to even play?

Wow! Sounds like in the movie "Friday Night Lights". Should Breck be allowed to toss the coin?

According to the KHSAA website, Atherton is 2-8 because of forfiet win/loss to Western. What is that deal?

This has happened in some basketball districts before. It is my understanding that if a district game can not be played for whatever reason (weather, school closings, etc.), each team gets a win and a loss officially placed on their district record.

So, officially, Western and Atherton have 2-3 district records while Breckinridge is 1-3.

Western benefitted from the windstorm and subsequent power outage. If they had played the game, they surely would have used an ineligible player and been forced to forfeit, which I assume would have knocked them out of the playoffs.

The KHSAA should not allow teams that use ineligible players to participate in the playoffs. I think that Breckinridge County should be allowed to play because they didn't break any rules.

Breckinridge's only win is via forfeit. They were 0-4 in the district (on the field) and outscored 150-20 in those four games. It's hard to have much sympathy for a team like that not making the playoffs.

The irony is the player(s) are eligible. Since they are ruled eligible, then the KHSAA should not have collected forfeits in the first place in my humble opinion.

Western was told they were eligible by the JCPS activities/athletics guru.

They did not appear in every game. As soon as Shawnee made an issue of it, Western sat the players until the KHSAA ruling. Sounds like the JCPS needs to strengthen their institutional controls.

Trinity and St. Xavier use the KHSAA clearing process before any transfer is allowed to set foot on the playing field.

Coin toss to decide things you gotta love that.

If they were eligible why doesn't the KHSAA give them back their wins? If rules were broken I don't think they should be allowed to play after the regular season is over

So you're saying the 2004 Highlands team shouldn't have been allowed to play the State Title game after forfeiting all their wins before the Championship game?

I believe that is the only way to be fair. IMO, this opens the door for all teams to try break the rules. What do teams have to lose by breaking the rules? From what I have been reading these players followed a coach and knew this could be an issue.

If rules are broken and teams play ineligible players for what ever reason why should they be allowed to affect all the teams in district?

What happened to the original method of using the KHSAA point tiebreak system...I think this puts Bullitt East and North Bullitt in a very awkward situation. I mean what is this "Friday Night Lights"? Are we seriously going to use a coin flip to determine playoff position.

Man if that is the case the Fairdale-Valley game should've never been made up...I know it would've made alot of people happy to have not played a Halloween night game. If that would've happened would they have had a coin flip for 1st in the district. I'm sorry but I think that is ridiculous. I know Western would win but the game should have to be played or neither team should make the playoffs. The KHSAA football tournament manual strictly states that "To be eligible to be champion, runner-up, third place or fourth place position of a district, a team shall play all other teams assigned to their district." Both teams should have to cancel their games this week to play and determine the positions. Once again certain schools are being given special privilages. This is one move that I am totally against. This will put one of the Bullitt schools at a major disadvantage as far as having to play Western in the first round and the other gets a cupcake game against Atherton.

What has happened to football in the state of Kentucky? I guess this is why we are a basketball state. They wouldn't let something like this fly on the hardwood.

Very well said. KHSAA should stick by the rules in your post.

Bullitt East won the district. They should not have to play the other district's champion which is Western. N. Bullitt is second and they should not have to play Western either. Another interpretation by Tackett as he sees fit. Basically Bullitt East and North Bullitt both could be punished for Western's problem. Keep them out of the playoffs is the answer imo. Don't know if this is a fact but i hear this is only being done this way because Jerry Wyman made the paperwork mistake and he is calling in a favor to the KHSAA. Why else would they be skipping the point system part of the tie-breaker rule?
