Coin toss will decide Western-Atherton 4A

I have been informed that they are not using the point tie-break system that is in place because the KHSAA only uses that system to break a 3-way tie...Since this is a two-way tie and they cannot use the traditional method of playing head-to-head they have gone to the only other tie break method in the book, a coin flip. I don't care if Wyman is taking the fall Coach Boyd knew the players played for him at Shawnee and should know the procedures that must be followed in order for a player to play. Therefore I fell as if the Warriors should be excluded from the playoffs for a second straight offense. When is this state going to punish people for not following rules? Highlands and Hopkinsville have both played ineligible players on thier way to the state championship game and were still allowed to play. What message does that send to the programs around the state that follow the rules. I was once told the good guy never wins and apparently it is true.

So you're saying the 2004 Highlands team shouldn't have been allowed to play the State Title game after forfeiting all their wins before the Championship game?

I agree, Highlands shouldn't have been able to play in the Championship game in 2004 after having all previous wins that year forfeited. However, I am a bit biased, that team did end our streak of 5 straight State Championships. We have gotten over it though, we are hoping to start a new streak this year. It sure didn't seem fair at the time, and it still doesn't.:irked:

It looks like almost everyone agrees this is one of the worst decisions the KHSAA has made. What can the teams that are being victimized by this do?

Who is being victimized?

I don't... who's the better team between Western and Atherton? How has Atherton earned the right to make the playoffs?

Actually, I think he's advocating for Breckinridge County ... even worse.

Actually I am not advocating for any I just believe that it is a ridiculous decision by the KHSAA...In essence you could have two district champions Bullitt East and Western having to play in the first round. Western was forced to forfeit two district game and then never made up a game with Atherton and is being rewarded with a playoff appearence. My question is when is the KHSAA going to step up and punish teams for breaking the rules. No Breckinridge County doesn't necessarily deserve a playoff spot. They haven't won a game, other than forfeits, since late in 2005. Atherton who won only one district games does deserve a spot however should be forced to play Western to determine position rather than flip a coin for a shot at the 3 seed. This is already a very tough district as is and this is going to make things even crazier.

As far as someone being victimized it would possibly be Bullitt East who's reward for finishing their district schedule undefeated could be playing Western who would be the district champion in the other district if not for forfeits. That is a Western team that really would finish the season with an 8-2 record.

My question is when is the KHSAA going to step up and punish teams for breaking the rules.
Hasn't Western been punished? Haven't they forfeited games and lost home-field advantage throughout the playoffs? And all for players that are now eligible?

Chances are that if Bullitt East went very far, they would run into Western anyway ... just that it's now more sooner than later.

Well then where is Bullitt East's advantage...They should just have all district champions play each other in the first round to see who should advance...They are all going to meet anyways right.

As far as Western being punished...This is the second time in two seasons that Western has been forced to forfeit games due to playing an ineligible player. Players that coach Boyd knew played for him last season at Shawnee, where he got fired for playing an ineligible player. Home-field advantage meant nothing to the Warriors as they have only played 2 home games this season anyways. Why wouldn't Western keep playing ineligible players they are going to have to forfeit a couple regular-season games and still make the playoffs each season. The forfeiting of games is just the KHSAA slapping the Warriors on the wrist.

Western has been punished ... just not to the extent that you would like.

If Im not mistaken...the kids in question at Western first played at Shawnee last year, then transferred to Iroquois at some point in time...THEN went to Western. I could be wrong, but I thought that was what happened. Im really not trying to start anything, but Im going off what I have heard. The thought was that Boyd was going to get the Iroquois job and thats why they went there from Shawnee, then when he didnt get it, they left for Western. If thats the case, clearly these kids wanted to play for Boyd. Nothing wrong with that, but it does raise some questions. Bottom line is...someone somewhere didnt get the job done right in making sure these kids were eligible to play. Where is Western's AD in all this??? Why is he/she not making sure that someone with Boyd's previous history is doing things on the straight and narrow?

Im not involved, just on the outside looking in...but it still raises questions about the people involved and what their ultimate motives are. Regardless of the situation, if this is twice for Western in 2 years, then that would indicate to me there is some question about the AD's ability there. But this is just my opinion. Which then bears the question...who is supposed to be ensuring the AD is doing their job? Wouldnt that be the prinicpal? And if JCPS is to blame...that is a whole other mess.

Clearly there are some bad issues here and in the end...good kids who didnt do anything wrong are getting punished.

So punishment is not playing at home in the playoffs? I agree with BullDog, " The forfeiting of games is just the KHSAA slapping the Warriors on the wrist."

An easier game at the beginning can give a team time to heal up and tune up. I believe the Bullitt county teams earned that right.

You're entitled to your opinion, but the forfeiture of two games and the loss of two home games in the playoffs is a punishment. Again, it's just not the one you want.

That's just the way the cookie crumbles ...

It is also punishment that Western, who not only would have been hosting a first round game, has to not only go ont he road, but go to the #1 seed.

As far as saying "What's fair for Bullitt East" as the poster hinted at... Bullitt East has no bearing in this decision. They did not compete in the district. They did not have their seeding or whether they hosted or travelled effected.

If you want to argue whether the way KHSAA resolved the tie-breaker and whether new tie-breaker rules should be in place, I am all for it. But, arguing about how they should be punished after the problem is already resolved is a little far fetched.

I wish both the Warriors and Coach Boyd the best of luck...This has nothing to do with the punishment that I "feel" they deserve...The AD is as much at fault as anyone and he should be punished as well...My main complaint is in regards to the rule that states "To be eligible to be champion, runner-up, third place or fourth place position of a district, a team shall play all other teams assigned to their district." Neither Western or Atherton have played all the assigned teams in their district. Valley had to cancel a game against J-town and Fairdale had to give up their bye week in order to play their game for the district championship. Why shouldn't the Warriors and Rebels be forced to play their game and have the seeds determined the way they were intended to be deteremined, on the field not with a coin flip in a meeting. Would it have been fair to determine the district championship with a coin flip, No! Better yet Fairdale would have won the district outright had their game not been played because they would have been 4-1 in district play and Valley would've been 3-2 if they had both been given a win and loss like Atherton and Westen were. Why use seeding and not instate a blind draw if we are not going to ensure that our seeds are determined correctly.
