You all are joking right??? You're leaving out a very good Harlan Co. team. Ellis at W'burg is a good young coach, she may surprise also. Just not that sold on "JD" yet, he had such a great group for so long at M'boro, wasn't much coaching needed. Bell's at least one year away, they have talent but are very young. That and still awful curious why M'boro wouldn't take him back.

Kelsey Robinson will be a senior this year .Conner should win the 9 th.They were fairly young last year.Wasn't there catcher a freshman?

 

 

The Catcher, Kaitlyn Williams, was a sophomore last year. Conner did start 4 8th graders last year though.

Not joking about the seperation between the 2 Laurel teams and the rest of the region. Not nearly as wide as it was, but still there is a big difference. The other 13th region teams need to step outside the area and play some much tougher competition to improve their programs. Harlan did play Lex Cath last year, and lost 21-7, but their schedule for 2009 will probably have them with a very good record, but unprepared for the postseason. The Laurel County teams are 2 of the winningest programs in the state (NL #1 in wins wit 455, SL #7 in wins with 381).

 

Last year Corbin had a very good season and pulled a major upset when the beat SL earlier in the season, but in the postseason, they were beaten soundly by SL in the district and NL in the region. Middlesboro had Jimison on the hill, who could keep them in most games. After that, the region was pretty weak. South outscored their opponents in the regional tournament 25-1 and lost to North 7-0 in the title game. NL outscored their opponents 25-1. The only team in the state tournament to score on NL last year was state champion Greenwood. There is still a big gap between the 2 Laurels and the rest of the region.

What did Central Hardin lose from last year? They had a solid team going 2-2 in the state tourney with wins over Lawrence County and Rowan County in Owensboro.

That was Harlan Independent. This will be Harlan County's first season. The roster is full of girls that played for a good Cumberland squad (that had 1 senior) last season that finished 5th in the region in wins. I look for the Lady Bears to be pretty competitive this season.

Cumberland had a decent team last year with a 20-10 record. But anytime they played a good team (Middlesboro 2 times, Southwestern 1 time and North Laurel 1 time), they lost badly. With more talent, they should be stronger this year, but you have to play a much tougher schedule to get ready for the postseason. Cumberland scored 6.8 runs pg and gave up 4.2 runs per game with a fairly weak schedule. North Laurel scored 6.8 runs pg and only gave up 1.1 runs pg against arguably the toughest schedule in the state last year playing most of the teams in the top 25. I hope they do very well this year, but there is still a big gap between the Laurel's and anyone else in the 13th right now. In my earlier reply I was meaning the joke about leaving HC out of the top teams. I doubt if you watched them last year, but if you did, you'd know what I was talking about. The Cumberland players combined with 2 very talented, young players from Evarts and a starter from Cawood will be very competitive. Plus rumor has it, there may be a surprise or two on the roster for HC as well. I completely agree there is a big gap between SL, NL and the rest of the region. I disagree about Corbin, the win over SL was a fluke at best. SL had several out with injuries and had two hurt early in that game. Corbin has the talent to compete, but... Most will be surprised by M'boro. Losing Jimison will hurt, but I don't think they will fall off that much. Powers has came a long way on the mound, if they can replace Jimison's bat, they should be fine.

South Laurel didn't have several out with injuries in the game Corbin won. I was at both games that day and if you remember, it took South Laurel eight inning with all of their starters to win 4-2.

 

The second game Gaines started, but got hurt, and South Laurel threw Justice and Corbin hit her, so they threw Fisher.

A 13-2 win can't be considered much of a fluke. Yes, the Lady Cardinals thumped Corbin 11-2 in the final of the district, but I don't believe you're giving Corbin the credit they deserved that game.

South didn't have any players out in either game.

Emily Gaines played third base the entire game in the 13-2 loss and played third base.

 

Also, with Corbin dropping a heartbreaking two-run game at home to open the double-header in extra innings, many would think that Corbin would be hard to pick themselves up in the second game after losing a heartbreaker, so that's why I can't understand the fluke statement. South was up 2-0 in the second game before Corbin scored 13 unanswered runs.

 

Like I said before, though, South answered back in the districts and won by nine.

 

Both teams are good and both have great coaches.

I agree with Jimison meaning a lot to the team, but the Powers kid is going to surprise some. If I'm wrong about the Corbin-SL game, I stand corrected. But I was thinking Justice was out with a shoulder injury (may have played, but don't think she pitched) and I thought they had the kid gone to the all-star b-ball tryouts (great player, but sorry, just can't remember her name, Wombles, maybe...). But I trust your info, I wasn't there just read the article and listened to others.

Anderson Co. 6 Shelby Co. 1. Might have counted Anderson out a little to soon.

In the 10th : See a lot of picks saying Montgomery and Clark. And by their previous reputations, deservedly so. But I wouldn't overlook the Lady Bears of Bracken. They have given Montgomery all they wanted on two seperate occasions. Both games were losses but could have easily went the other way. If I'm Montgomery, think I'd prefer not to face them again in the Region. NO knock to MC or Clark here, they have been the class of the 10th for some time.
