I agree with everything up to Peter Warrick

 

Peter Warrick-Played on teams with no QB and not other receivers his first few years. Had a good 2003 season once had some help, and then plays hurt to try to help team make the playoffs and was never the same.

 

Justin Smith-Overrated. Decent DE who goes non stop, but should not be making the money he does

 

Levi Jones-Was basically a Pro Bowl LT for 3 years and shut down all kinds of elite pass rushers. But now looks like those knee injuries have slowed him down. Was good pick at the time.

 

Carson Palmer- I don't see why you all say he had two good seasons and then got hurt. His first season starting he was decent and got it going at the end before he got hurt. Didn't make Pro Bowl that year. 2005 he was great. 2006 the year after his surgery he was also great. I really don't know how you all don't see that. There is a reason he was a pro bowl MVP that year. He also put his team in positions to make the playoffs, but other parts screwed it up. 2007 well still had decent numbers just not as good as the two before. He also had no running game. This year got hurt. I think people need to take the blinders off and realize Palmer when healthy is still one of the best in the league, but since the 2005 season things around him have gotten worst. So did draft a Franchise QB here and still is one...

 

Chris Perry- Obviously now shouldn't have picked him. But its easy to say something after you see the results. Injury prone whole career as well.

 

David Pollack- overhyped? Every team had him going in the first round. The thing with him is IMO we should have kept him at DE and not switched him to LB. So was a good pick at the time.

 

Joseph-Another good pick. I mean we could have two pro bowl corners and they still would get beat right now since we have no pass rush.

 

Hall-Same as above

 

Rivers-Going to be a good one.

 

IMO 6 out of the last 7 years we have actually done pretty good in the 1st round of the draft. Its the rounds after that, where we have really done bad...

1st alternate for two of them and 2nd alternate for one. Those two seasons he was 1st alternate, he should have been on the actual Pro Bowl team over Jonathon Ogden. Ogden at that time, was not the dominant left tackle he had, and seen him get beat by the top pass rushers that Levi was shutting down at the time. But as you know, or alteast I hope you do. When it comes to offensive lineman for the Pro Bowl, it just comes down to recognition. Basically once you make it once, you end up making it a few times. I mean look at Willie Anderson, it took him forever to finally make one, even though he was probably the best RT in the league for years. Once they finally put him in the pro bowl though, he was there every year..I can't defend Levi though at all this year. He has just been bad with false starts, getting beat for atleast one sack a game, and obviously not running blocking since non of them are doing that. So I do agree the Bengals have to address the line now.

Maybe one of the worst plays in recent Bengals history. I rate it with the delay of game taken on the very 1st play of the 2002 season. Just a typical Bengal gaffe. I guess we have become used to such ineptness. Wonder what coach Singletary would have done??:flame:

Here's my two cents on the subject...

 

David Klingler - The dreaded "system" QB. This was one of the guys who helped coin the term, and helped NFL teams figure out that run-and-shoot QB's in college who put up monster numbers are very risky picks.

 

John Copeland - Bust.

 

Dan Wilkinson - Bust, but its hard to question this pick, IMO. Most people projected him to be dominant, and dominant DT's are game changers. Plus, he was from Ohio.

 

Ki Jana Carter - Tough break with the injury. Can't lay this one on the Bengals.

 

Willie Anderson - Good pick. Period.

 

Reinard Wilson - Bad pick. Period.

 

Takeo Spikes - Another good one. Spikes is still a productive LB in the league.

 

Akili Smith - Terrible pick. They made the mistake of falling in love with the physical tools.

 

Peter Warrick - Bust. But, most people thought he'd be better than he turned out.

 

Justin Smith - Solid pick. Nobody hits HR's on every first round pick and Smith was a solid guy during his stint in Cincy. May have been better if he'd ever had anyone around him to ease some pressure. Who knows?

 

Levi Jones - Solid pick again. He was a good LT, until injuries (it seems) have really hurt him.

 

Carson Palmer - Definitely the best of the bunch. Franchise QB and one of the best in the league when the supporting cast gives him a chance.

 

Chris Perry - Bad pick, that's been even worse with Perry's injuries and performance.

 

David Pollack - Tough break with the injury. We'll never know if he'd have been good or not.

 

Johnathan Joseph - Good young corner. Good pick.

 

Leon Hall - Another good young corner and another solid pick.

 

Keith Rivers - May be too early to judge, but I liked what I saw prior to the injury.

 

Overall, I think their first round picks have been decent since Peter Warrick. It was pathetic before that.

 

The bigger problem, IMO, is that they typically don't do anything with the rest of their drafts. They rarely find a "hidden" gem later in the draft, or get productive guys to round out the roster with solid depth.

How's this for a draft mistake? In '04, the Bengals traded the 24th pick to St. Louis for the 26th pick, and the 27th pick of Round 4. The players selected?

 

St. Louis (1st Round - 24) - Steven Jackson

 

Cincinnati (1st Round - 26) - Chris Perry

(4th Round -27) - Stacy Andrews

 

 

Now, I still think Andrews has the potential to develop into a stud. If he does, it may not look so bad. But, here's the thing...the Bengals were obviously targeting a RB and Steven Jackson is and was better than Chris Perry. On top of that, they pick they acquired in the 4th was their third pick in that round. They could have got Andrews anyway.

 

The Bengals traded down twice in the first round and got Deltha O'Neal and two additional 4th rounders. Here's what they did in the 4th that year...

 

#18 - Matthias Askew, DT, Michigan State

#21 - Robert Geathers, DE, Georgia

#27 - Stacy Andrews, OG, Mississippi

 

What if they had stayed at #24, picked Jackson, and then picked Geathers and Andrews? It would have been better.

I would like to see the Bengals draft a big, offensive tackle. Either Oher from Ole Miss or Smith from 'Bama, or another big guy that I don't know about yet.

 

Then I'd like to see them put Odom / Rucker on one end and Geathers on the other. Take Stacy Andrews from the o-line and stick him in the middle at DT. Let the big guy do his thing.

I do know Irons packed up and left his digs in Ludlow. I didn't think they resigned him. As of right now, Benson is the only one who is capable of starting, and he is only signed through this year. Perry is not an NFL back. Dorsey has shown a little spark here and there. Watson can serve a role player at best. Do we have any FBs on this team? With that said, they better not draft an RB or any skill player with that 1st pick. O line and more O line. Then D line.

Its so easy to say should have got this guy, after we have seen them perform. I mean we had Corey Dillon who was doing great and the only good thing on offense at that time. So made no sense to take LT. Then I mean everyone had Justin Smith rated higher than Richard Seymour at the time.

First the Bengals have to resign Benson. Secondly the Bengals should draft another runningback. Dorsey is good to have on the team, Watson is alright. But much rather draft a runningback around rounds 3 or 4. Runningback is definitely a position they would need to address.
