In addition to the fund raising and transfers, there is already the large potential talent pool associated with one public high school for a population of 40,000.

Coach Hicks has really done a great job building the program. And seems to have had the support to do so. Scott Co. has always been pretty good, but since Coach Hicks got there they have been an elite program.

Did he come up with the fundraising idea? I would have to give major credit to the person that came up with this idea for building their program. Without money it is difficult to build a program, and in the economic times we are facing it gets more difficult all the time. IMO, without the financial support of the private sector, their would be no high school sports in KY.

While all that stuff helps a ton the most important thing is having players and a great coach.

In order to get a great coach a program must be appropriately funded. A program with great facilities and financial backing will attract quality coaches as well as quality players.

 

I agree that Hicks is a good coach, but I believe you are way underestimating what money can do for a program.

My point is that the program didn't have a big tournament and fundraiser until Coach Hicks got there and really got the program going. There are a lot of great coaches that would have great programs with or without money. A prime example would be Bill Mike Runyon with what he did with Paintsville.

Al Holland

I am sure I am leaving off some very good ones, but these are the guys I consider elite based on watching how their teams play more than anything.

I would agree with Fanofthe11th that funding is important, maybe the paramount factor in qualifying for the "best coaching position in the Commonwealth". Some schools, like Scott County do a great job fundraising. Does it also correlate that in a situation where there is only one county high school (in a county) that the funding is favorable to an urban located school, or where there are multiple high schools in a county?

I would have to add Gary Forrest of Oldham County to the list of elite coaches. He's a Hall of Fame inductee who has taken five Oldham teams to the Big Dance...two of those teams were not expected to be big contenders for the Region 8 crown.

 

I've seen too many times when a Gary Forrest team, outmanned on the floor, defeated a superior (athletically) opponent.

 

Forrest has over 400 wins at Oldham heading into this season.

This will gather a few laughs, but My vote is for Augusta. The entire community loves Coach Kelsch for what he's doing now, and doesen't have to improve to keep that support (meaning- no pressure). He can keep going 17-12 and making regional appearances, and they'll treat him like a god there. Keep up the good work Robin!

No one is mentioning Covington Holmes. I have never been to Cov. Holmes, but it helps to coach good players. The last few seasons Holmes has been loaded with talent. I know in the past they have had some disciplinary issues, but it appears they have a great group right now. I believe that would be a good place to coach.

 

Some of the stuff that Coach Henley has to put up with crazy. In terms of talent, facilities, and history within the 9th region then I'd consider Holmes a good job; however, I can think of plenty of other programs that are easier to coach. Not an easy job, and Coach Henley is often overlooked in the 9th.

Everything else being equal...I would rather play the best in the finals at Rupp than the finals at Region.
