Corbin 49 North Laurel 28

Featured Replies

final.

Hounds roll. They should go into the playoffs undefeated.

Corbin seemed uninspired in the 1st half. Gave up 14 pts.

2nd half Corbin came out much stronger, scored 3 or 4 tds in the 3rd quarter.

2nd team and JV played a good deal of the 2nd half, especially defense.

Was Wardrup injured? Didn't see much of him in the 2nd half.

Where is the fan support for North? I counted 81 people in the seats on the home side (not including band) just before kickoff.

If the team is winning, they will come. If not, they don't. About all you will see at the games right now are family members of the players, and not all of them come out. North has only had consecutive winning seasons 1 time in school history, 1 district title and no playoff wins. They want to build some tradition in something besides girls softball and cheerleading, but cannot seem to turn the corner. Have been close a few times, but I am not sure what the problem is.

Better be carefull, You've got S-set and coach Cobb ain't no punk!!

I think most of the NL fans are tired of the same old story. It is unfortunate for the players that people don't show up but that is the way it works.

North Laurel has some really good athletes --- I was wondering where the support was also . . . they are MUCH better than their record would indicate. GOOD LUCK Jags the rest of the season.

North has not had much success on the football field since Greg Duncum left. Softball and cheerleading seem to be their best athletic events. They did win one baseball regional but other than that not much to note has happened with their sports programs.

They sure weren't on the South side of London last night either. I don't quite understand that. Even when Knox Central was going 0-10, we were putting 500 or so in the stands.

There were several (not more than 30) standing along the fence. That is the fewest fans (parents) I have seen turn out for a game.

Corbin should be the favorite in the Somerset game, but it is Corbin vs. Somerset if we are undefeated that'll put a big ole bullseye on our back. You can throw records and rankings out the window in Corbin/Somerset games. The 56 -47 game last year was one of the wildest HS games I've witnessed.

BUT, let's not forget we have to travel to Tim Couch land next Friday.

Leslie County will be a game much like North Laurel was. Somerset is too young to contest the Hounds this year. Corbin wins both and heads into the post season undefeated. When the third round hits, only time will tell if this schedule has prepared them for the final run.

When it has been good at North, it is usually the girls. Softball has a state title, 2 runnerups and several top 4 or 5 finishes, girls cheerleading has won numerous state titles and finished as high as #2 in the nation, girls soccer had a great run a few years ago with regional titles but have slipped, girls track is really improving and becoming a solid program. The boys programs just seem to lag behind.

Boys sports

Football - 1 district title (1994)

Basketball - 1 district title and 1 regional runnerup

Baseball - 1 regional title

Soccer - I think 1 regional runnerup maybe 1 regional title, but South's soccer team has dominated that region for years

Track - getting better

Tennis - competitive but not dominant

I agree that the football program was on the rise when Duncum left. It was a bad time for coaching change. Nothing against Abbott, he is a good man who has worked his tail off, but it just wasn't a good time for the program for that to happen at that time. They went 3-7 that season, losing 5 of those 7 games by a TD or less. They just couldn't get over the hump the year after nearly upsetting eventual 4A runnerup Scott County in the first round of the playoffs in Georgetown. Sometimes a change like that can take the wind out of the sails of an up and coming program and they just weren't able to continue the upward progress after the change.

However, in this game, .. the Jags had the lead 7-6 and could have extended it to 14-6 had Wardrup's TD run not been called back due to a penalty. The 3rd quarter, the Hounds just took control, but the first half, the Jags stayed right with them. I think if North could make the playoffs this year (and they still can), it would be a positive step forward with a whole bunch of this talent coming back next season. This is still a young team who hasn't learned how to deal with the ups and downs of a game/season and let their emotions control them too much. As the mature, they will improve.

I can't see that one being very close. Leslie is very young and struggling right now.

Hey MT- I know of at least 2 regional runner-up finishes for NL Boys Basketball.
