I said last year after the first two games, that maybe he wasn't the best coach for CovCath and I got blasted by some CovCath faithful. I find it hard to believe that the CovCath football team just don't have the talent. So IMO I would think it would be on the coach. As I said last year, his system may just not be whats best for the kids that is in the program.

I don't know much about Brossart's situation at Covington Catholic, but he's going to have a very difficult time staying there if we continue to lose as badly as we have thus far.

Brossart will be fine. Just like any program with a new coach, you tend to have to graduate all the players from the previous regime in order to get your philosophy bought into. Cov Cath will always have the athletes to compete, Dave's team will turn the corner next year. This team will be much better going down the stretch this year, but may be too late to make a run in the playoffs.

From what I heard about the game (and this was from a CovCath fan), CovCath may have 2 maybe 3 players on their team that could crack Highlands starting lineup. I've seen CovCath play and I'd probably agree with that assessment. Their O line is big, but terribly slow and unathletic (and to think their coaching staff was, in the preseason, billing their O line to be the best in the state). Their qb is big, but awkward and doesn't throw the ball very accurately. Their D line (with one exception) is small but not quick (not a good combination). Their linebacking corps (with the exception of a kid named Van Sant, whom is a flat out stud) is weaker than years past. And their secondary is small and not very athletic. Bottom line is that CovCath just doesn't have the athletes that they've had in the past, although I will say that when I saw them play, they played their hearts out and didn't quit.

I thought it looked like they hung their heads early in the Highlands game and if they would have stayed the course it could have been closer.

 

I wouldnt throw the coach out with the bath water either. Give him some time to establish his philosophies and get the kids to buy in. Their schedule is brutal this season also.

I think he is, they announced him as a senior at the Highlands game.

 

BTW- CCH should finish 5-5 in reg season.

 

They beat a very good NCC team and lost to 3 fabulous teams. Lets cut em some slack somewhat. Going to the PITT next week will be a monumental task.

Is the talent just not there. Or is the talent just now there for the system he wants to run? I just really find it hard to believe that CovCath should be as bad as they have been the last year and a half. As a coach you suppose to fit your system to the type of players you have. So I just wonder if his system is really best for the players he has. In my opinion it is not the best system for the players they have right now, so should have been using a different system that would best help his players succeed. So I do put that on the coach. It seems to me he trying to force a system on his kids, and I been there before. It just dont work when a coach tries to force a system on kids, that dont fit them the best.

The politics in High School Ftbl is embarrassing. Since when does "an influencial Fan" get any say so about a coach's career, if that is the case. Most of these big mouths have never touched the pigskin.

I can reason with the fact that Brossart may not be the "right coach" for CovCath. However i wouldnt blame him for the way his team performs. The talent he has just isnt anywhere near the talent as the teams they have lost to so far. I can understand the coaching effecting a couple of misread plays or various substitutions, but in High School if you have the talented players they will make the plays on the field. Obviously there is miscommunications or team issues within CovCaths locker room. Whether the players like the guy or not, they need to step up and play their game.

I have no idea about whether this coach should or should not be the coach for CCH. However, I think a guy deserves more than two years to make his mark on a high school football program.

 

Also, while it's true that CCH did win the state title (in 2006) the year before the current coach stepped in, it had been awhile since CCH had won their last state title before 2006. I think the coach deserves some time to get things going.

 

Having said that, I think Coach Brossart owes it to the school, fans and the CCH football program to focus all efforts on matching up with the Bluebirds. I know that the games against Beechwood and Dixie mean a lot because of geographical reasons, and I also know that CCH prides itself in taking on (and hanging in well against) strong Catholic programs in Louisville and Ohio, but the CCH coaching staff needs to focus all attention on developing a team that can beat Highlands. If you want to beat Highlands, you need one thing in spades: SPEED. CovCath has often been known as a big, strong, and (frankly) slow team. That may help the Colonels match up against teams like Elder or Moeller, but it won't do well against Highlands. The coaching staff needs to eat, sleep, and breathe Highlands football.

I still think you have to have the horses to win and coaches do great jobs but players have to execute so I dont think a Mueller led CovCath squad wins against Highlands. I certainly think it would be closer though.

 

Future coach to respond to you, I get it. A coach's system can play havoc on certain players and their strengths but man they just dont have team speed. You cant transform those kids into faster kids without work and if the program is in place to get there and they are not then what can you do. Now someone did bring up in an earlier DIATRIBE (leatherneck) that if the coach isnt instilling programs to increase team speed and strength then there might be a problem.
