There is absolutely zero talk surrounding the Pikeville/Belfry matchup this Friday. This is the first year I can remember this game not having any hype behind it, or any conversation back and forth about the game. It just doesn't feel right not seeing a Pikeville/Belfry thread on the board with tons of post.

Neither school has much of a following here anymore and the game has lost a lot of its luster with Belfry winning the last 7 matchups.

I agree, and I also long for those days as well, there was nothing like watching those two teams go at it. But on the other hand I have also noticed the following for Belfry on BGP decline as well, and I think thats a shame, just two years ago we probably had one of the biggest crowds on BGP.

Belfry will not win this game. Pikeville will walk all over them.

I noticed there wasn't a thread also, and a noticable decline in Belfry-related posts. Not that that's important for BGP, just an observation.

 

But as they say, success breeds familiarity, and with their decent amount of success over the past few years, a lot of "hype" has faded. I think that may be popping up in attendance, also.

 

I too would like to see this game a little more heated, but due to both programs being at their best, not both teams sliding towards average or mediocrity.

As for the lack of Pikeville/Belfry talk:

 

1. 7 Straight wins, with most of them being one sided.

 

2. Belfry has turned the corner in their program with 5 straight trips to the Semi's... Pikeville has not been to the semi's since te last time they beat Belfry.

 

3. Coaching turnover... since Hilliard Howard how many coaches has the Panthers' had?

 

4. Media coverage... I respect the role that our local newswriters do and the effort they put forth, but lets face it, the News-Express and WDN are secondary in sports coverage to a paper which comes out once a week! The writers for both the WDN and ANE try their hardest, but when you are the only writer it is much different than 10 years ago when each paper had 3 or 4 people covering HS Football daily.

 

5. When I first joined this site back in 2001 there were maybe 3 Belfry posters... skip ahead a year and there were maybe 5... in 2003 there were maybe 83 (haha).... in 2004 it dropped to maybe 20 (lots of Belfry fans got Das Boot).. 2005 going down... 2006 going down... 2007 even more... 2008 the few and proud remain. (There are still Belfry fans out there chatting about the games but the quality is different)

Oh no, not at all! Maybe I didn't state it well. In order for the game to be more "heated" both programs need be on about the same level, competitively speaking. That means either Belfry slides down, or Pikeville improves. In the future, any scenario is possible (both good, both down, or one ahead of the other, as it seems to be now). I'm saying when it becomes heated again, I'd rather see both programs at their best, not see both as middle of the road teams down the road.

 

This was a very heated rivalry in the 70's (I remember one particular brawl) and the 80's (stopping Pikeville's win streak). The 90's had some great games, such as the end-of-the-game pass interference calls in 95. But Belfry's dominance of late (this decade) has not made it as hyped as it once was.

 

Belfry has been and seems to be at the top of their game. I hope Pikeville gets to that level again soon. It can be a challenge in 1A tho. And coaching changes make a difference too.

OK, I understand you now. I agree... the game that used to be billed as "The Real Pike County Bowl" is now the topic of debate as whether the series should end. I truly hope that Pikeville's porgram returns to the heights it once knew, it would not only make EKY football better, but all of KY football better.
