FED rules:

3.1.1 A coach, player, substitute, attendant or other bench personnel shall not: ...(o) call “Time” or use any command or commit any act for the purpose of causing a balk;"

 

NCAA 5-15(2) and OBR 4.06(a)(3) both have very similar language.

 

OBR 4.06

PENALTY: The offender shall be removed from the game and shall leave the playing field, and, if a balk is made, it shall be nullified

 

 

 

Good work but this by no means applies to the situation described. There is no rule preventing the coach from calling "balk" after a movement by the pitcher that he interprets as a balk. This rule applies if, in the judgement of the umpire, the coach intentionally caused the balk by making a sound or motion . The key term is "Causing." I suspect the scenario as described is different. I understand the situation to be that the coach said "balk" after the pitcher made a motion to a base. Most coaches who feel a balk was committed will usually say something at that point. Doesn't make it right, doesn't make it bush league either. Just makes them human. Had he CREATED the balk by making a motion of yelling, then by all means, take him out and have him drawn and quartered.

You are correct BD77. The aforementioned wording, is to induce a balk from a Pitcher and not for infractions. If a High School coach, continuously yells/comments "balk", than most Umpires would warn him and if continued, eject him. Like you, I've seen many instances, where the comment was to make aware the possibility of a balk, at our level of play.

 

NCAA is different, in regards to NFHS.

Preventive umpiring stops all problems. Coach yells balk, umpire says something then the problem should be solved. If the coach is dumb enough to say it again then he gets what he deserves.

 

I see balks quite a bit and I don't yell balk because I know the rule. Now I will say something to the ump about it after the inning.

Nothing bush about using the rules to your advantage and having your team better prepared than the opponent. Good, smart, creative coaching.

Your pitcher should NEVER stop just because he hears someone say "balk". Hopefully kids are coached to block out what other people/crowd noise/and other distractions are going on around them, or they are going to have a hard time on the "hill".
