NCC 25 Ryle 20

Featured Replies

It seems like Ryle made a lot of mistakes in the 2nd half. Could you say that Ryle took the role of NewCath when NewCath played CovCath?
Absolutely , Deja -vu with the roles flip-flopped .:ylsuper:

Poor clock management at the end of the 1st half. Could have gone in at 20-13 instead of 20-19. At some point in NKY, to win you have to be able to run the ball and run the clock. In the spread offense the thinking is that every play is a TD. Not always.

I agree about their passing game being effective. I didn't mean to imply that they weren't, only that in recent years NCC has had a "pass up and down the field reputation" and that certainly didn't happen tonight. But they were certainly effective. NCC's rushing attack was much better in the second half, though they did put the ball on the ground several times.

Off night for NCC's kicker or a problem area? Can't keep missing extra points and short FG's and it not one day bite you in the butt.

Chris Grosser, NCC'S kicker does a good job, all 3 misses were caused by bad snaps 2 low amd one high.

Good win by NCC--Sounds like quite an exciting game?

Tried to listen to it on WazooSports.com but couldn't get their broadcast?? Something about Satellite Static Interference?? Anybody know what happened?

NewCath has really relied on the running game more this year. But, even in those pass it up and down the field years, they were close to a 50/50 split on yards passing/rushing. You are correct about the kicking game. They've missed a lot of PATs this year, that is inexcusable. Additionally, their kick coverage team really needs to improve. Ryle busted a long return in the fourth.

I would like to talk about that drive. Why did Ryle choose to kick the field goal w/ 5:05 left in the game and down 5??? I understand get down by 2 and try the on-side. Why not try to get the 1st?

I didn't think the choice to try for the FG was too outrageous. I guess a case could be made that as much problem as Ryle had moving the ball in the second half that they should have gone for the six while they were that close. Then again, with the offensive problems they were having, ten yards was a long way to go. From a pure football strategy perspective, I think it was an acceptable decision.

I was a bit more surprised at the decision to spike the ball on third down near the end of the game. I believe it was 3rd and 8 with about one minute to go. The way they lined up I thought they had a play called. That late in the game and with as much trouble as they were having on offense, that's a pretty tough call to give away a down there. So they were left with 4th and 8 from inside their own 10 and I'm not certain they had more than one play all second half that gained 8 yards. Ryle's o-line is doing a decent job in the rushing game, but is having some protection issues in the passing game.

Those who truly understand the spread realize that the spread encompasses a lot of seperate philosophies. The only thing that they have in common is that there the QB is generally in the shotgun and has 4-5 wide outs to work with. Ryle ran a lot of draws and bubble screens. They appear to be using the spread as an offense to control the ball w/ short high percentage passes, sort of a wide running play for them. I believe as their QB matures you will see the play book open wide.

Unfortunatley (well, at least for Ryle ;)), it appeared as though NCC defense adjusted nicely to this offense last night. Jammed WR's at the line and blitzes were getting good pressure on QB so he had no time to wait for WR's to come open. The problem is going to be that, until Ryle shows an ability to throw downfield at least somewhat, they are going to see this over and over. It's one thing to employ the short, high percentage passing game when you have a rushing attack with Vince Murray/Scottie Grey/Adam Schmitz types, but Ryle does not have that luxury right now. They have some very nice RB's, but not yet in that caliber. But they'll continue to get better, as they have a lot of talent and good coaching.

NewCath should send CovCath a thank you not, b/c they made every possible adjustment to Ryle's passing game as they could. They were definitely ready this week. Kues and Doyle split time at Free Safety on passing downs. Last week NC tried to stick in a 4 man line and sub a LB for a DB. This week they took out a D lineman, went w/ a 3 man front and brought pressure from everywhere. Very good adjustment after the 1st quarter. That and Kues playing safety really strengthened the secondary last night.

Does Kues not normally play both ways? He seemed to be out on defense quite a bit last night as I recall.

That was his first game that he played extensively from what I remember. The one thing that he does that many don't pay attention to is long snap punts. As soon as he snaps it, he's gone. Last night that cause a lot of problems for Ryle's punt receivers.

Not hardly, snapper couldn't get the ball to the holder, this continues to be a problem for their kicking game, this needs to be resoved before they get into a game where it counts. I heard the kicker was drilling them in warmups from 45- 50 yards out.

A "good" long snapper is a rare find - I can show you over 15 different posts from this weeks games that mention long snapper problems.

The long snapper is usually specialized and never gets accolades (sp?) nor even a name mentioned - the kicker comes on and scores the points, is announced publicly, and ....long snapper just does his job (same should be said for holder, but he is sometimes mentioned).

A good long snapper has to try and "walk on" to college programs except for a few coaches that recognize the importance - Danny Hope formerly at EKU was one of these coaches - he gave a scholarship every two years to a LS.......

Ray Guy kicking camp now has dedicated area for long snappers camp and evaluation. Div 1 gives LS scholarship son a three year cycle from what i have been told.

It is a thankless special job - no credit, but blame evertime there is a screw up :)
