I don't want a woman candidate that is not qualified. I don't want a "token". It has to be the right woman. It doesn't matter to me what her politics are, I would respect a pick I felt were founded in her being the right person for the job. What's to celebrate when you feel (and the campaign has said) that Palin was picked, in part, to attempt to woo the disenfranchised female Hillary supporters? Where's the respect for the women in this country to realize that they're being underestimated in their ability to support the right candidate whether they were male of female? If you are a female in this country, and you really want equality, you realize that it's not enough to just have a woman on the ticket, but to have the right person on the ticket. Pandering is belittling.

Nobody questioned whether Hillary was Chelsea's mother. Nobody suggested that Obama put his presidential aspirations on hold to spend more time with his children. Nobody sent swarms of reporters to the south side of Chicago to grill Obama's neighborhood friends.

 

Palin has been subjected to more unfair media scrutiny in less time than any candidate in history. Her selection caught the Obama folks by surprise and they have attacked her personally while they look for more substantive dirt.

 

Every VP selection has a political component. Joe Biden was a horrible presidential candidate and he was picked to be an attack dog and in an effort to appeal to the small town and rural Americans who Obama has disparaged himself.

 

Palin's selection had more to do with appealing to the Republican base than to women. Ironically, Palin has helped McCain more among men so far than with women.

Yes, because I believe the family should be left out of it in the decision over Palin's fitness for the job. Even the best intentioned parent's children make mistakes. In the end, you can only raise them to the best of your ability, and try to instill the values you hold in them. But, they are people and will make their own mistakes regardless.

 

No, because as a candidate who is put forth as an example of a higher standard of values, the campaign kind of opened the door.

 

If the situation were reversed, and Obama had a daughter that was a pregnant teenager, the conservative media would be all over it, holding it up as an example of the failure of a liberal in instilling family values.

And I would say it's every bit as wrong. There's no place, even in politics, for this IMO.
