WW III

Could this be the start of World War 3? We are in Irac , Afghanistan fighting now. Iran and North Korea are provoking. Russia is invading. What could be next for the US?

I think it is possible we will all be speaking Mandarin and eating dog-meat with chopsticks.

I have often wondered whether we any longer have the juevos to charge the beaches at Normandy.

If World War III starts, I feel that when history looks back our time period; we will be seen as the aggressors and the catalyst for the war. There was a legitimate reason to invade Afghanistan. I could even possibly concede for argument sake that we had barely enough reason to justify an Iraqi invasion. But a preemptive strike on Iran, and North Korea(who seems to be cooperating) would be disastrous. Even intervention in the Russia/Georgia conflict would be disastrous. It is time for America to stop policing the world. We need to settle our business in the middle east, and then leave as quickly as possibly. We need to fortify our borders from outside attack, and then begin to fix America's internal problems.

I think we do Hearsay, if we feel threatened enough. There was enough of that feeling right after 9/11 and in the assault on the Taliban in Afghanistan. It's a broken record I know but I think the minute we decided to go into Iraq (right or wrong) we lost that feeling and momentum. Once the invasion war was over and the covert war began, the support and feeling of threat waned.

Just my take.

Excuse me for not being a crazy nationalist who has a sunshine and farts view of his country. We aren't beyond making mistakes.

I could see U.S. Troops out of Iraq within 2 years at this point in time. N. Korea seems to have been cooperating last I heard and Iran is probably going to be in a conflict with Israel BEFORE they are ever in one with us.

The Russia/Georgia thing is something that concerns me because the Russians, even well before the Soviet era, have always considered themselves the masters of Eastern Europe and were pretty consistent in throwing their weight around. Considering the fact that Eastern Europe has only really been stable in recent memory UNDER the rule of the Soviet Union I am not so sure I mind the idea of them taking over Georgia if it comes down to it.

As potent as our military is, it currently lacks the manpower needed to fight someone like Russia and Russia understands this. Pound for pound we are equal to or superior to them, but numerically we are dramatically inferior and NATO would not be terribly unified in helping us to protect Georgia. I hate to say it but for the sake of peace at this point in time we need to let Georgia twist in the wind with what they themselves provoked.

If Americans had a sense of shared sacrifice, I think we could. But when only certain portions of the population are asked to make sacrifices, it creates resentment and a "why bother?" attitude.

We are one of the only countries who has very good ties and are allies with/to Israel. They have always had our back with almost anything we have done whether it was right or wrong. If they were to go to war with Iran, we may not be directly IN the war but we should do everything to support them whether it be guns or ammunitions.

And as for a conflict between the US and Russia, I believe we are surperior tot hem (despite numbers). If we were to get into a war with them I believe we would win but it would severely weaken us and leave us vulnerable to other nations. I'd almost guarantee that Iran, North Korea, and China would act at a moments notice once it saw that.

If you ask me I already think that the US has peaked at its power and that we are slowly on a decline right now...

China is steadily rising and haven't seen the peak yet and evenutually I believe they will pass us whether it be in this lifetime or the next.

You need to be careful with this "always" talk. The United States was, outside of a few individuals(i.e. Truman), largely neutral towards Israel until JFK. Eisenhower was quite intent on keeping the peace in the region by NOT favoring anyone in particular, this is notable when looking at the Suez Crisis of 1956 in that the U.S. condemned the actions of the U.K., France and Israel and was instrumental in negotiating a settlement that removed those three forces from the region and replacing them with U.N. peacekeepers. It is important to note however that this was back when the U.N. was an organization with more teeth than it has now.

That out of the way, I don't think we need to much to support Israel because they are largely self sufficient and know their stuff in the region far better than we do. If they attack Iran, we should tacitly support them with munitions, I agree. I would not want any direct military involvement though.

By and large our technology and weapons are superior, there is not doubt of that. The problem is numbers and deployment times. They are already there, while we have forces stationed in Europe they are not enough to stop an all out Russian attack. In fact they (along with NATO, i.e. European forces) were meant to slow down the attack enough during the Cold War so that when further forces arrived in Europe they could push back the Soviets. Our MBT (M1A2 Abrams) is superior to the T-90, there is no doubt of that in my mind or most experts, but the problem is that Russian numerical superiority is such that even with a superior fighting machine they can simply overwhelm our forces. Our organizational, strategic and tactical doctrine takes this into account which is why we have the AH-64 and A-10 to further supplement our tank killing abilities.

Our Air Force is superior and with F-22's in service FINALLY, we could take control of the skies but the Russians have again numerical superiority and if their newest generation fighters are comparable to ours then it would be a rough fight. I can't claim much knowledge on the latest generation of Su's or MiGs.

Artillery is largely a wash with them again having numerica superiority. In fact the only place we are dramatically superior to them is our Navy and a few well placed subs can wreak havoc in carrier battlegroups. Note the surfacing of a Chinese sub recently in the midst of a CBG, during a U.S. training exercise.

Infantry wise they have many more in uniform, gear-wise it is probably a wash and training wise I would probably give the edge to our troops right now on account of combat experience.

Our biggest advantages are our technology, air force and navy.

If we were to fully mobilize as a country then I could see us narrowing the numbers gap which would give us an edge with our superior technology but unless Russia attacked us directly we would not declare war (which I should note has not actually happened since 1941), and without a full mobilization of the U.S. I wouldn't expect us to meet the Russians evenly in the field.

We quite possibly have. We have become too accustomed to our cushy lives, comparatively, and as such are unwilling to take the risks that helped to make this country what it is today.

I think we would be smart to court China and try, via diplomacy and business, to turn them into a more open country that would be consistenly friendly to the west. Basically take the approach that the British did when they saw that the United States would be ascendant. Just my thoughts on the matter.

Excuse me for not being a crazy nationalist who has a sunshine and farts view of his country. We aren't beyond making mistakes.

Who said you were?

But the fact that you are against pretty much everything that the US does speaks volumes if you ask me...
