Diplomacy takes time and the EU carries more weight than we probably do with the Russians. The conflict is only 6 days old. I'm sure that's cold comfort to the Georgians but how many get on here and talk about the notion we should only be interested in places that are of vital interest to the US. At this point I'm not sure I see so vital an interest that we send our troops (air) into the fray.

And since I went to St. Thomas, excuse my doubts that it will work. But I think we have to at least give it a try. Putin as I've expressed on here before, is one of the smartest and dangerous leaders in the world. He knows we are going to hem and haw through out the remainder of Bush's term. He knows that France, Germany and Italy look at Russia as a very important strategic partner of their's and will be very reticent to act strongly against Russia until its gotten to the point that they have to act. And Putin will take them right to that line and then step back a baby step. I feel sorry for the people in the former Soviet countries because Putin wants all of those countries back under Russian control. If we learned any thing during the Cold War, the Russians only understand power. I hope our next President feels the same way too, whomever it is.
August 13, 200818 yr Seems a little like Nazi Germany doesn't it? Just going in to whatever country it wants. It's no hidden secret that there are some high up in the Russian government that wants to bring back the Soviet empire! Georgia is a US ally, But NATO should have let Georgia join in April as the US strongly pushed, and not push the invitation back. Russia saw that as a signal that it could do whatever it wanted to Georgia. I think that NATO will be letting Ukraine in asap, as they were the other nation that the US urged it's members to let in NATO. Edited August 13, 200818 yr by SportsGuy41017

I believe before WWI and WWII started the US said the same thing, it's not or problem, until it got out of hand then we decide that the only way it will end it is we jump in. What if Georgia was accepted into NATO 3 1/2 months ago as the US urged NATO members to do? do you think that the US would have an obligation to help out/defend a fellow NATO ally?

Even though it is really none of our business, the NATO alliance we have will surely make sure we become involved in some capacity. If we aren't in alliances, we are allowed to look at the situation and judge for ourselves what is the best course of action to take.

The best thing that we could do is withdraw from the worthless United Nations and stop wasting money supporting it. This is exactly the kind of dispute that the UN was formed to address and if it is of no use to us now, then it is of no use period.

I believe in the idea of a United Nations, but the UN in its current form is a failing entity. I have no problem with a UN that raises money to give aid to support Health clinics in rural nations, or to help eradicate diseases(Polio, Measles,Malaria) that should not kill millions every year. A UN that brings countries together to help fix problems, not one that creates them. BTW, did you know if we wanted to, the USA alone could wipe out polio and other childhood diseases in Africa.
