August 13, 200818 yr http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26116598/ This could get ugly fast, if they start to shell Tblisi, America will have no choice but to call in air strikes. Here's a map so you can see how far the incursion really is, they've just about split Georgia in half. http://encarta.msn.com/map_701510731/Georgia_(country).html

August 13, 200818 yr Author Because for one there are 2000 American citizens in the capitol. Also, it is a democratically elected govt. Who we have supported. We can't let the Russians try to extend their empire again. If we do we will go directly back into the cold war, except we will have China and Russia to deal with, and that may be too much for us to be honest. Isolationism does not work, we can't sit back and allow our enemies to gain more and more power. And yes, Russia is our enemy. Putin is trying to bring back the communist govt there. He has already put a stop to opposing media and candidates.

One could also make the argument that us invading Afghanistan and Iraq was an attempt to spread our Empire.

Because setting up freely elected governments, taking out terrorists and dictatorships is the same as slaughtering civilians and putting everyone under communist rule.

He has already put a stop to opposing media and candidates. We've allowed other nations to do the same as Russia, all I am asking is why is this totally different? (For the record I probably agree with much of what you are saying about us acting but to immediately call for air strikes is a little knee-jerk reaction to me.) Again, they have an elected government. So did Panama but we went in and took out Noriega in the late 80's. Hamas was elected but we did nothing when Israel moved into parts of Palestine. In case you forgot the Cold War did involve China. (Korea, Vietnam and the never ending struggle with Taiwan) The Chinese stopped being an aggressor towards us after Nixon's trip and the 70's went by. As Gooch said, we removed a non-friendly government in Iraq and they were on the other side of the world.

August 13, 200818 yr An air strike in Georgia, even in defense of Georgia, will not help Georgia. It will only serve to bring a full-out assault on Georgia by Russia as they move to defend their position there from the US. THINK! Airstikes and invasions are NOT the answer!

I didn't say airstrikes immediately. If they start a bombardment on the capitol city of Tblisi, which they have already bombed their air defenses, we will have no choice but to launch air strikes on the artillery delivering the strikes.

Why do we have no choice? Why is it our business? If we go with your logic or protecting the little guy;then we need to invade a large part of Africa.

Again I ask, Why do we have no choice but military? You didn't say immediately, you said fast. This could get ugly fast, What is the benefit for our air strikes? What would they accomlish? Would they halt the Russians in their tracks? Will it really stop their offensive? What would our casualties be? My guess is they have air support too that we did not see the likes of in Iraq (either time). When we are finished, what will we have? On the other hand if we throw our support with the EU and put some serious twists in our diplomacy (then strike if necessary) we might gain a lot more effectiveness.

I'm certainly not in favor of any sort of military action in this case until all other avenues have been exhausted, but I'll answer your question with a question. Of what worth are we, as allies, if we decline to honor our treaties with friendly nations? I'm assuming we have some sort of mutual defense pact with Georgia.

That's a good issue to raise but this is the first time it's been mentioned if we had such an agreement. I thought we only had those with our closest allies. Answered my own question. Did some digging and it seems we hand those things out with everyone who joins the UN, or close to it. Edited August 13, 200818 yr by Hatz Found new data
