August 10, 200818 yr "From each according to his(her) ability, to each according to his(her) need." "Sell everything you own and give the money to the poor" "Blessed are the poor for theirs is the kingdom God." How is the basic philosophy of Marx (outside of his hatred for the Christian religion) different from some of the teachings of Jesus?? BTW, any know why Karl disliked Christians so much???
August 10, 200818 yr "Religion is the opiate of the masses." Pretty clear why Marx disliked Christianity.
August 10, 200818 yr It isn't. Socialism, in theory, is the most Christian way. Aquinas (or maybe it was Augustine) suggested that a perfect Christian society would be fairly socialist. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. Why did he hate Christians?
August 11, 200818 yr Author This is only anecdotal, with no links and someone may be able to validate . . . The story goes that his family was really struggling in the early 1800s. It was tough in Europe, and all over around that time. There was a Christian church nearby and the family went to the church for help. At first the church said no b/c they (the Marx family) were Jewish. Then they decided that if the family were to convert that they would be more likely to be helped. After a long inner struggle the father decided to convert to provide for his family. The father was obviously resentful and little Karl held that resentment his entire life.

August 11, 200818 yr Why doesnt it work? I agree, but why? Because the drive in life is how much can I gain. Instead it should be, how much can I better society.
August 11, 200818 yr Why doesnt it work? I agree, but why? You know the rich quickly get jumped on for not doing what is best for society. But many, many of the poor or working poor share equal blame as they are choosing to not work, not get educated so that they can be a betterment to society. My dad quit school at 6th grade. That has limited him on what he could do most of his life. He shares blame in socialism not working because he DID NOT do what HE NEEDED to do to better society. Now, he did learn from that mistake and except nothing but me doing well in school and making sure that I would not be a drain on society.
August 11, 200818 yr You forgot a word.... YET! If you knew me you would know that it wont happen.:thumb:
August 11, 200818 yr Why doesnt it work? I agree, but why? Human beings are inherently greedy. I believe that the best social system is (as Hayek said) is the one that best utilizes the forces of human nature, as opposed to using coercion.
August 11, 200818 yr If you knew me you would know that it wont happen.:thumb: Paul persecuted and killed early Christians. Who would have thunk that he would have become one of the greatest Christians of all time.
August 11, 200818 yr Jesus is not speaking of socialism, he is speaking of gaining everlasting life and the sacrifices he was asking of individuals. One reason that I believe taht Marx and his ilk hate God is that peoples freedoms are granted by God. If there is belief in God the people cannot believe in a government that wishes to take away your freedoms. In a godless society the government is all powerful and can tell you what to do, because they are in charge of what freedoms you have, which is zero. A reason socialism does not work is that an person's initiative is eliminated, because what they create goes to the government and redistributed, meaning you do not get to keep your own personal production. The only people who believe in socialism are those who seek power or are to lazy to produce for theirselves.

If you believe in him living after he got nailed, he instructs the Church of Acts to live like a Communist community; without using those words.

August 13, 200818 yr "From each according to his(her) ability, to each according to his(her) need." How is the basic philosophy of Marx (outside of his hatred for the Christian religion) different from some of the teachings of Jesus?? BTW, any know why Karl disliked Christians so much??? I believe that Jesus is talking about the condition of the heart more so than monetary gain. What stops humans from doing the purpose for which they were created? Their own! All of us from time to time become so dependent upon what the world says we need and focus our energy towards those goals that we forget about our Lord. Materialism, is what many people go for throughout the ages this has been the case, wars have been fought for lands, people stealing, or people wanting objects (or false gods), it unfortunitely still continues today. Jesus, however, comes and offers us a light, or a way out, He says to first love the Lord with all of your heart, mind, and soul. Get rid of those things that cause you not to do so. And the second commandment explains the first quote "Love your neighbor as you do yourself". The third quote I believe is a true understanding of the Lord. When you are broken and have nothing, what a glorious moment, for at that point, who do people turn to (I hope) God! When people realize they have nothing, they start to understand that we are just stewarts, we can not take anything with us, so why spend so much time worrying about things like work or school, when you are at home with your family. People realize the things that really matter, might be playing catch with his or her son, having a confercation(sp) with a spouse, visiting neighbors, going enjoying the day that the Lord has created! So the basic philosphy is different not from a monetary standpoint but again one from the purpose for doing! May God Bless and let us remember to give thanks for all of these wonderful posters!

The people work freely for one another, denying their greed and working for the betterment of society Communism as it is understood today is a single party government system. You are describing some sort of anarcho-collectivist system. Marx and Christ have little, if anything, in common. Marx specifically criticized the societal results of capitalism, which was, in his view, a clear two-class system. He held that a worldwide revolution of the proletariat would bring about their ownership of the means of production. Religion, or Christ, dulled the would be anger of the working class into acceptance of their lot. As far as Jesus is concerned, Marx was right.
