The Jets

Featured Replies

They got better on offense. Fanecca and Mangold are bitime up front. Ferguson has been a major dissapointment but that still rounds out a nice line. Jones is a workhorse + Cotchary/Coles are good WR's. They can't stretch the field vert very well but Farve does well in the short passing game. B. Smith might be a guy to watch on that side and I like Keller a lot.

My problem with the Jets is their defense. They weren't very good before and now the don't have Vilma who was their best player. He didn't fit the 3-4 well but he still had a presence. I know he was out with injury.

The Pats are getting older for the most part and I don't think they are going to do what they did last year. With that being said the Jets are pretty much playing for the wildcard and I think it's the last wildcard spot. That means you have to measure them vs teams like Pitt, Clev, Cincy, Balt, Den, Buff and Tenn. I don't like their chances. If they creep in then it's a road game so probably one and done. That's why I thought it was such a bad choice for Farve.

On the flip side if he beat Brady and Manning out then that would be one heck of a way to go out.

The Jets made some other moves than getting Favre, they have improved themselves greatly imo but improved from 4-12 may not be saying a a lot. I am picking 8-8 and hoping for 9 wins and a possible playoff for the Jets this season. I just don't think it will happen.

This isn't close to being the same team that went 4-12 last year.

They signed Alan Faneca, arguably the best LG in the league. They signed Damien Woody who is a solid and steady RT. Obviously, they upgraded the QB position with Favre. And, they drafted Dustin Keller at TE to add another playmaker to the offense.

Defensively, they got Kris Jenkins from the Panthers to play NT. They signed Calvin Pace from Arizona and drafted Vernon Gholston to add some pass rush.

It basically depends on whether or not you think things will come together and click for this team...if it does, they certainly have enough talent to compete for a wild card spot.

They won't miss Vilma. As you said, he didn't fit in their 3-4 scheme...he's a great talent, but there LB's will be better this year because they'll have guys who fit better. David Harris, who was a rookie last year, is very good. He should be much better in his second year. Their defense, IMO, depends on Kris Jenkins staying healthy and how well Calvin Pace and Vernon Gholston play. If Pace and Gholston can't give them a pass rush, their defense will struggle. They have a couple of great players in the secondary with Darrelle Revis and Kerry Rhodes. If they can solidify the other two spots, they should have an above average secondary.

This team has potential...there's no doubt about it.

No way. In the AFC with the Jags, Pats, Colts, Steelers, Titans, Browns, no way they make the Playoffs.

You are probably right but I wouldn't rule Favre out, he is a flat out winner. Should the Jets give him enough support then I think they are a possibility. Again, I am not looking for it, just not ruling them out.

I personally would love to see the Titans and the the Steelers out of the playoffs (but the Steelers will probably be in as well as the Jags). I do hope that the Browns make it some how. Pats and Colts are imo a pretty sure bet.

The Jets playoff chances come down to how all those free agents and rookies gel together. On paper, the Jets have talent at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Favre can be great, but if the D struggles, they will be on the outside looking in.

Here's the schedule:

@ Miami

New England

@ San Diego

Arizona

BYE

Cincinnati

@ Oakland

Kansas City

@ Buffalo

St. Louis

@ New England

@ Tennessee

Denver

@ San Francisco

Buffalo

@ Seattle

Miami

There are 10 wins in there if the Jets gel quickly and play to their full potential. I think they get in, but I root for the Jets so it is tough to be objective.

Jets will finish 7-9, 8-8. I think even if they do manage to get 9 wins it would be VERY difficult to get in the playoffs.

I do know this, if they manage to make the playoffs, ESPN just might explode. Favre will be worshipped more than he already is right now for taking a nothing team to the playoffs.

I wasn't surprised at all to hear all the ESPN people saying how the Jets are a playoff team now. Everyone does remember how tough the AFC is, right?

Those are the games I see the Jets losing. At 8-8, I don't see them getting in.

If the Jets show the type of improvement I expect, I agree with the 8 games you picked plus I think that they have a shot @Buffalo and @ Tennessee. I would also toss in the Cincinnati game and Denver game as winnable. Again, if they gel, I say they win 10 of those 12 games. They have no shot to beat New England, San Diego or Seattle at Seattle, IMO.

I looked over their opponents for the 2008 season, IMHO the JETS will go 10-6 this season. :dancingpa

People are forgetting the good season the Jets had the year before which was Mangini's first season as coach. Remember how magically after one season he was dubbed Mangenius. But after last seasons flop (due in large part to injuries and lack of running game) people have wrote them off. I look for them to go 8-8 with a chance at winning a couple of more.

That is what people were saying last year with the Browns. In the NFL you see turnarounds a lot quicker than others sports.

There are only a handful of teams each year who don't have a chance to make the playoffs in the NFL. The Jets certainly aren't one of them. Aside from Favre they made some huge additions through free agency. And, if Gholston and Keller deliver as first round picks, on paper, the Jets improved as much as any team in the NFL.

The Jets are just another one of those teams who have the talent to compete for the playoffs but their margin for error is slim. I'd group them with teams like Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Tennessee, and Denver.

IMO, the Patriots, Jaguars, Colts and Chargers are locks. Pittsburgh, Cincy and Cleveland will battle for the AFC North...the rest of that list will battle for the lone remaining Wild Card spot.
