First, he is denounced for not promoting off shore drilling.

Then he is denounced for revisiting the issue and deciding to change his position. Not only that, he is denounced for doing the same thing that McCain has done! Iftwas not too long ago that McCain was against drilling, too.

No big suprise, I guess. No matter what he does, some will denounce him either way.

wording was terrible

Dont you know, once you make up your mind it can never change...

Obama once again shows his propensity to do the popular thing.

This is not a change of position.

What he said in the article is that he would be willing to use the "art of compromise" (Henry Clay anyone???) and allow drilling if that was what it took to reach across the aisle to develop a comprehensive energy policy.

I guess you would prefer he buck up his heels and never compromise and continue the gridlock that has been rampant in Washington since 94???

Offshore drilling is not a "foundational" issue. It can be used to get something done.

But not McCain when he did it just a few months ago?
You will get no argument from me about McCain changing positions. I am still hoping that he will come to his senses about ANWR drilling.

The difference between Obama and McCain is that McCain has taken some tough, unpopular positions and stuck with them - the surge being just one of many examples. While I disagree with many of McCain's positions, I do not see how anybody can try to equate the rapid policy reversals that Obama has made with McCain's flip-flops.

Both men have changed positions since the campaign began but I honestly cannot think of an example of Obama taking a politically unpopular position on any major issue.

I know that McCain has a history of taking tough stands and sticking with them. I suspect that Obama, if elected, will resume his career-long practice of pandering to the far left wing of his party.

So you are saying that McCain is better because he has taken many positions that are unpopular (most people disagree with them) and he has been so stubborn that he can't admit that his position was likely wrong?

McCain has taken positions that he believed were right and he went out on limbs to sway public opinion in his favor. In the case of the surge, McCain's position has been vindicated and Obama still cannot bring himself to credit the surge as the most important factor in reducing the level of violence in Iraq. In the case of the unpopular "comprehensive immigration bill" that McCain co-sponsored, a large orchestrated outcry by conservatives managed to stop the bill from becoming law.

The point is great leaders are risk takers. They are willing to take unpopular positions and confident enough in their positions to believe they can persuade others of the merits of their position. This is a trait that McCain has displayed, which is unusual for a US Senator, and it is a trait that has been totally missing from Obama's bag of tricks.

Obama has no executive experience. He has not been a leader - I do not believe that he has ever even been responsible for meeting a payroll.

Maybe Obama will develop some leadership skills in office but many people remain followers for all of their lives. It makes no sense to me to vote for a follower for president. I remember what happened when Americans took a chance on Jimmy Carter and do not want to see us repeat that mistake.

Well, if nothing else, Aces, you are certainly feeling better about McCain, I think. Maybe those consevatives that plan to "hold their nose" and vote for McCain would do well to read the bolded part. Obama or no Obama, republicans could certainly do a lot worse then McCain as a nominee.

Obama once again shows his propensity to do the popular thing.

Aces, I like the fact Obama wants to do the popular thing USUALLY the popular thing seems to benefit the majority of the people. Hence Bush's low approval rating and I know personally me and my family are not better off because of Bush. Changing America's direction may mean changing your mind. I think it is good leadership skills to make good adjustments to policies. We get on other forums and criticize coaches for their unwillingness to change or make adjustments to what will work in a game. A President is a coach and IMO they must make adjustments in the game that will benefit the team {Americian People}. I like the fact the man can say let's look at this again and see how it helps or let's revise this policy to serve a greater good. This is something Bush wouldn't do and according to most the the members on his team the {American People} 76% of them including myself say that he has failed us miserably!

What changes do you believe Obama will make that will improve your lot in life and that of your family? Will imposing new taxes on oil companies lower your gasoline and food prices? Will levying higher taxes on the people who already pay more than 40 percent of federal income taxes improve your life? Are you confident that Obama will make the correct foreign policy decision when Israel is finally forced to respond to Iranian threats of nuclear annihilation? If the Russians begin arming Cuba again, are you confident that Obama has the leadership skills to deal effectively with the challenge?

I want a president who is capable and willing to make the right decision based on available information, regardless of whether the decision is popular. Leaders shape public opinion - they do not just create a focus group and hire pollsters to tell them which decision will help their public approval ratings. Our founding fathers created a representative republic for good reason. A pure democracy in which elected representatives always vote in accordance with their constituents' wishes is not the kind of government that I want to see in this country.

I often disagree with John McCain but there is no disputing that he has the courage and leadership skills to handle the job. Obama has shown no such skills in this campaign or in his career. He has always been a panderer and he avoids making tough decisions whenever possible. Obama reminds me of Supreme Court nominees in the post-Bork period trying just a little too hard to avoid making a mistake.

Or maybe, just maybe it's The One saying whatever he needs to say to get elected and then Heaven knows what he will do if he is. That's one of my issues with him and those that have partaken from his vat of Kool-Aid. They seem to believe everything he says is Gospel while in reality he has reversed himself so many times you can't know where he actually stands. So it really surprises me taht anyone would believe that he would actually follow through with anything he has promised because who knows which Messiah promised it.

BTW congress (and The One is a member of that organization) has a lower approval rating then the President, and the Saviour's party has been in charge for the past two years.

i would like to get a refund instead of paying taxes. When Clinton was in office we always got a nice refund. under Bush we have been wiped out every year. I think Obama would go back to the structure of taxes which would hopefully make my families financial situation better. And we haven't changed jobs or made that much more money in fact we added a child and I believe Bush has bled the middle class to death with a war I still am trying to figure out! I think Obama's ability to speak will help our foreign policy. He is loved world wide something we have not had from a president in 8 years. He is being compared to Kennedy and he did a pretty good job with the Cuban Missile Crisis. I want to see a change I have to admit I am so Anti-Bush that I believe no matter what Obama couldn't do any worse!

Anyone notice how certain posters spend 99% of their time trying to tear down Obama and practically none making the case for McCain?

I wonder why that is?
