August 2, 200818 yr Tacky ones, too....! Multi colored, random patterns, half of which flash on and off, half stay lit constantly.

August 2, 200818 yr I do some volunteer work in a health clinic for the homeless. I am always amazed at those who cannot afford their medication (and are supposed to be homeless) who are talking on their cell phones in the waiting room.

I am always amazed at those who cannot afford their medication (and are supposed to be homeless) who are talking on their cell phones in the waiting room. I used to think this was odd, but...many people these days, even those with more money, use cell phones as their only phones. Also, there are some pretty economical plans and equipment out there. I don't see this as an indication of waste, just the way life is these days. People forego the traditional hardline home phone service for portability.

Actually, I attribute this to the fact that processed and canned foods are so much cheaper than fresh fruits, vegetables and meats. Given a choice with a budget, let's say, of $100 for two weeks of groceries, one can get a lot more out of their hundred dollars if they buy canned veggies and processed meats. They last longer (because of preservatives). I spend about $25 a week in fresh veggies and fruits. I hate that in some busy weeks some of it goes to waste because I couldn't eat it fast enough. :creepy: I often think how much better spent my money would have been if I had bought the canned versions instead. I love how all poor people are stereotyped because we think they're all must be lazy and wasteful.

Amen, rockmom! :thumb: It's easy for us to do it, too, from our nice big houses and our new cars, or as we are headed to the airport for our vacations, or as we pack our kids up for college. There are certainly those that abuse the system, but there are certainly those that don't.
August 2, 200818 yr I will say, as far as being overweight, rockmom is correct. Most of the soup kitchens serve a lot of pasta and potatoes. It is more economical, fills people up quicker, and lasts longer. In addition, if they get any money it is often spent on fast food. Many of our diabetics have a hard time controlling their blood sugar because of the limited amount of healthy food available out there. However, in addition to owning cell phones, the vast majority of our clients smoke and drink as well, yet cannot afford a bottle of Advil. I have worked with the homeless for over 10 years. THAT gets discouraging sometimes. I dont think anyone is trying to stereotype ALL poor people. The initial beginning of the thread was very amusing, mostly because it is true in many cases.
August 2, 200818 yr I noticed that. I took it as another way of saying "no matter how poor some people are it never ceases to amaze me that some of them always seem to buy....." :thumb: :thumb:
