Eligibility question

Featured Replies

Bylaw 6 is the key and the eligibility is fine this coming season. Your original question referred to the on-going debate over whether to amend Bylaw 6 to include 8th graders that "transfer" from one system to another - all tied to the public private debate and the objections to private schools getting 9th graders that played varsity for public schools in the 8th grade or younger. I'm not sure whether that amendment has passed at one level and is awaiting Board of Educ. approval, or whether the amendment lost/was delayed at the KHSAA or Board of Control levels.

This amendment has failed and IMO along with other people I have talked to, it will probably never be added.

The KHSAA does not care what type of schools are involved. The rules are the same regardless.

I wasn't stating that about public/private because I thought it was a public/private debate. I added that information in response to 20/20Hindsight's remark that if "there was a legitimate change of address..." and in this case there is not change in address due to both schools being in the same city.

I am not sure I understand the comparison to the Verity Middle School issue. Did the Rose Hill transfers play on the high school varsity team at Rose Hill. Even if they did I don't see how they could be banned from playing on a middle school team at another school since KHSAA does not govern over middle school sports, from what I understand.

My concern was that this student had played high school varsity ball as a middle school student and would be playing high school ball this year as a freshman. I was led to believe that if I switched schools she would be ineligible because she had played high school varsity last year. The person that told me this incorrectly informed me that the ammendment to bylaw 6 had passed and was in effect.

This topic can be confusing especially since they have been talking about it now for a couple of years. Your daughter should be fine though. Good Luck!

Verity had a 7th grade team last year that just lost 1 game. They won the ovc big school division. At tryouts the 7th grade had 21 girls showup they kept 12. If you do the math we could still have a team without the 3 girls who left Rose Hill to come to verity. We had over 40 girls go out for the 2 teams last spring pretty good numbers.

Does this mean that there are 3 girls who have played in the Ashland school system in grade school not going to get to play in middle school because of transfers? I recall this was a big deal with the whole Region when OJ and friends attended Rose Hill.

If they are good enough they make the team. We have 7 grade schools in the system that means if just the starters go out for verity you have 35 girls trying out. Someone will not make the team we can't keep all of them.

Marooncat I grew up in the Ashland School system and I can only remember six. Who is the 7th.

1. Hager

2. Hatcher

3. Crabbe

4. Poage

5. Oakview

6. Charles Russell

Do the girls that went to Ashland live in Ashland or are they from another state? Wasnt this the main problem when Rose Hill had OJ?

The 7th school is Holy Family.

Wow. I didn't realize that Holy Family had merged with Ashland Independent schools.

I know the Gambill girl lives in Ashland, but I don't really know abuot the other girls.

If the girls are from Ashland then there should not be a problem. I could see if maybe they were out of state coming in and taking spots.

Gambill lives practically across street from Verity.

Cullop less than 5 minutes from Verity.

Hammonds lives about 10 minutes from Ashland.

The Young girl has to pass Boyd Co Middle School and Rose Hill Christian to get to Verity

Depends which direction you drive.

I thought Holy Family was a private Catholic school?
