July 30, 200818 yr There's only 2 choices. 1) Take responsibility for your actions (both mother and father) and raise the child. 2) Have the child and give it up for adoption knowing you can't provide the type of upbringing the child will need. Come on this is American, we don't have to take responsibility for our own actions. The government should bail out these unlucky people.
July 30, 200818 yr Those aren't solutions. Those are edicts. HOW do we assist these women in their choice to carry their child, and then to keep it, or assist in arranging adoption? I really don't see the difference.
July 30, 200818 yr Seriously, dude! If you don't like the way I post a topic, could you please PM me in the future? Those are some reasons. What do you feel are viable solutions? I think your topic is great. I maybe slightly PUI tonight.:scared: I would overturn Roe. Take away abortion as a viable solution. I don't agree with thegooch's "coat hangar" theorem's, I think before Roe there were simply more girls scared of shame. Shame can be a powerful tool (no pun intended). I'm not sure what else, at that point, other than to eliminate the barriers to private adoption and possibly to give taxincentives to private charitable enterprise engaged in the placement process. I mightv also eliminate or severely overhaul the Department of Social Services to keep those Nazis from threatenting every pregnant 16 year-old on the planet. I'm not going to advocate building more motherhouses or orphanages because that requires tax money and I'm not willing to shell out tax dollars so that I can give comfort to reckless private behavior. Actually, I'm a lot more soft-hearted than this its just not coming acorss that way.
July 30, 200818 yr Author I really don't see the difference. Well, maybe because your male, you may not see what obstacles there are. Here are a few: 1) No home. Let's say it's a teenager and the parents throw her out. 2) The father doesn't accept responsibility. Can be really tough for a young girl to deal with all alone. 3) Lost school time, could result in not finishing school. 4) No job 5) No money for pre-natal care. 6) Have the baby, try to raise it, and face any/all of the above. Yes, there are some social aid systems in place for some of these things. However, it's a huge task for a (in this example) teenage mother to figure out. They're scared. They often have no idea what the heck they're supposed to do. And, before Hearsay nails me on semantics, I'm not talking about the same segement of people he keeps throwing into the equation. I'm talking about an otherwise "good" girl who honestly did NOT ever plan to get pregnant, and never even thought about the abortion issue, as she didn't think she'd ever be in that position.

Actually, I'm a lot more soft-hearted than this its just not coming acorss that way. What if churches ran homes for at risk mothers, where a mother could live with her child through pregnancy, until the child was say two or three if necessary? What if there were volunteers there to assist with child care and parenting counseling? What if there was a "professional mentoring" program for at risk mothers to help them get their feet into doors to decent paying, above minimum wage jobs? What if a requirement of a mother who'd received help from such a place must "give back" by helping provide some things like babysitting once every couple of weeks at the house after they'd "graduated"?

Also, for the purposes of this discussion, R v W has been overturned.

I'm sorry for being so poopy. Nice girl gets pregnant. Didn't plan it. Sperm donor won't help. Disgusted parents boot her out. Penniless and education on hold and in jeopardy, scared girl does not know what to do. The first thing I would do is head to the nearest Catholic Church. No other institution in the world has better resources to deal with this particular crisis. Next stop is to the County Attorney to deal with 1) the deadbeat sperm donor and 2) if the mother is under 18, her parents for abandoning her and abdicating legal responsibility.
July 30, 200818 yr I would agree that the churches would need to do a major push on their congregations to open their homes more and step up to the plate and show these children and these women the love of Jesus Christ through adoption. I firmly believe that the fear of fellow church members reactions leads to some girls having abortions.

That's great advice.:thumb: I wonder how many 16 year old girls know that's an option? How about we add some free legal counseling for girls so they know their options? I know that the situation I described sounds over-the-top dramatic. But it actually isn's as uncommon as many would like to believe, especially from familys with strict moral compasses (for lack of a better term). Maybe not ALL of the things I listed occur at one time, but any combination of the above can be devastating, right?
July 30, 200818 yr I firmly believe that the fear of fellow church members reactions leads to some girls having abortions. I firmly believe that the misplaced fear of SOME fellow church members reactions leads to some girls having abortions. As they say one bad apple spoils the whole bunch. The focus is on the small minority that might have a negative action and the girl uses that to ease her concerns about having an abortion and THAT is the reason she is wanting an abortion. That is an excuse, not a reason. When the reality is that the vast majority would not have a negative reaction but rather a supportive loving reaction to an unwed mother.

Irrational as it may be they fear the reactions that they know are coming.
July 30, 200818 yr Author New question: How many of you (and I know some already do), would be willing to donate your time and "treasure", ie legal advice (thanks for the example Hearsay. ) to help at-risk mothers through their pregnancies and after?

Well, I sought a transfer to an alternative school format in our county. Not the only problem by far but is frequented by those that don't make the best decisions.

What would be hard would be getting the school systems to add this information as part of their sex ed programs.
