July 30, 200818 yr Not to sound completely unsympathetic but simply because of Biology there's always going to be a inordinate amount of reesponsibilty that is heaped squarely on the female's shoulders in the case of an unwanted pregnancy. It's not fair but there's nothing that can be done about it. And for what it's worth I feel that males who father babies and then completely ignore their responsibilities are among the lowest scum of the earth and should be hounded doggedly by all legal means to financially bear the consequences of their irresponsible behaviour. And I'm sorry but when the otherwise "good" girl chooses to have sex it doesn't matter wehther she planned on getting pregnant or ever thought she would be in that position. She's there, now she has to accept the consequences of her actions. A parallell. When an otherwise "good" person chooses to drive after having one to many and then causes a wreck that injures or kills someone there are consecuences. Chances are they didn't plan to injure or kill anyone, and they didn't think they would ever be in that position but there they are none the less. In my little mind it's the same. The irresponsible behavior is the same, the consequences are different, obviously, as one is criminal (injuring someone in a DUI wreck) and one is not (having a baby). You are right that you have to deal with both. If you injure someone in a DUI wreck, you might get a paid-for public defender. What type of assistance do we pay for the pregnant girl?
July 30, 200818 yr On a side note, anyone watched Baby Borrowers? It has been great to see these teens dealing with being a parent. I personally have what I call "birth control stories" that I share with my students. My children vomiting on me. My children pooping or peeing on me while changing diapers. My children doing this gross thing or that gross thing. If you are going to have sex and run the risk of being a parent, be prepared to be vomited, pooped or peed on. As a High School teacher, and parent of an almost Terrible Two, that is my new favorite show.

So, you've asserted that the girl will by default bear more responsibility. Despite your pragmatism, do you feel any sort of attempt should be made by others to assist her in deciding to give birth, rather than abort?
July 31, 200818 yr She has to because of biology. There's no way to change that. I have said consistantly that the father should have some input, after all you pointed out that it takes two. Personally I would cover 100% of the medical expenses for pre-natal care and delivery if the woman doesn't want the child and then I would assume full custody. I firmly believe that the parents should be involved if it is a minor. A 15 year old can't get cold medication without parental consent, it's absurd to me that she can have a major medical procedure without consent. And I would be very much in favor of a sonagram being required on all women prior to abortion in the interest of informed consent.
