With the movement of higher gas prices and the fact that some school districts are not allowing their sport programs to schedule long distance games, could Kentucky see a change from district games to conferences games? This is something that other states do.

 

Schools would still stay in the same class (A, AA, AAA, etc...) and would still play for a state title in that class against teams from the same class, but in the regular season they would play a conference schedule instead of a district. The conference could be any team within your area (could be of any class as well) and your playoff chances would depend on a ranking system combine with a point system. (I know that some may not like the idea of the points and ranks.)

 

I know that some schools would enjoy playing teams closer to home and it would make bigger rivials. The conferences could consist of any number of teams and yes, if you did not want to be in a conference, you would not have to. But I would think that every team would want to be in one.

 

So what are your thoughts and what are some teams that your would like to see put into a conference (must be close to each other, that is the idea of this) and what would you name the conference??

So long as teams are still in classes I don't see where there is significant difference between this and the districts. The districts are geographically aligned. There would seem to be a major reliance on the scoring system that factor in how to rank a team from 6A who beats a team from 1A.

 

How would Jefferson Co be handled? There are more than enough teams for everyone in Louisville to fill up there schedule with local teams. If Trinity plays Male, St X, Manual, Ballard, PRP, Eastern, Central, Fern Creek, Butler, and CAL and goes 8-2 how would that compare to Southern playing Atherton, Waggener, Valley, J-Town, Western, Desales, Holy Cross, Doss, Fairdale, and Iroquois and goes 10-0. One schedule is significantly tougher than another.

 

However if the playoffs were eliminated and there were no KY State champion, nor were there any classes. The conference that I would want Manual to play in would consist of the best teams in the Louisville area.

What would be the benefit for most teams? For example: Raceland plays Russell and Greenup Co, the other two teams in the same county, Raceland plays both Carter Co schools (East Carter and West Carter) Raceland plays two of the three teams in Boyd Co (Ashland and Fairview) with Fairview being a district game. Raceland could add Lewis Co and Boyd Co, but then there would be some travel involved.

 

LCA and Paris are the only distant district games, that is two trips every two years, except for playoffs that will happen either way. Is that really going to save that much money?

 

I don't know how most teams do it, but Raceland plays in the district games and plays in the EKC conference also. Most districts are four or five team districts, that leaves five or six games to play in a conference.

Tennessee is going to a new plan of alignment they call they z plan. Look on tssaa.org to get the details. It addresses the travel and local rivalry issues. For some teams it looks pretty good, but other teams are really going to struggle.

The truth happens to be that while this would raise many people's ire, it would more likely than not, be a major creator of interest and debate in high school football. BGP would probably melt down over debates of which teams belong in which post season bowls. I think it would be MUCH more entertaining to follow high school's football if it were modeled after the BCS system.

I can only assume your already a follower of high football and this structure may be entertaining for individuals like ourselves on BGP, but ultimately its about the young men on the field. If this system would be structured anything like college football, I do not see how it would benefit our young men. We already know it doesnt benefit at the college level.

 

Im a firm believer its the defensive job to get off the field, if they cant stop a team from scoring dont complain. But I also believe, an opponent should not run up the score just because they may drop in the rankings if they did not score 50+. Just my opinion and certainly we can agree to disagree.

By no means do I think this would be another BCS mess. Certain rules and guidelines would have to be in place. For example, each class would still take the top 32 (or we could say 16) teams from each class for the playoffs. How would the top teams from each class be determined? Wins and your strength of schedule could be a factor. Perhaps a team must have at least a .500 record to have a shot? Must have won at least 6 games?

 

There are a ton of options that would be applied to this to make it fair for everyone. Right now, we have people complaining about 4 team districts and everyone makes the playoffs. Is that fair??? If we had the coaches association make up a system that was fair for everyone and everyone agreed to it, then I would see no problem with football in kentucky going to a conference setup.

 

Again the idea of going to a conference, is to play closer games. There would no longer be a district set up. Your conference could be set up with teams from different classes. (the idea of playing closer games.) You would play 10 games still, play everyone in your conference, and play the remaining games with whomever. When the playoffs roll around, then you would play within your class, taking this to a district, regional, semi-state, state championship format (like we have now). Seedings would have to take place to determine who would play where. Again, this is something that the coaches association could determine how we would set this up (or the KHSAA.)

 

I was hoping this would be more for fun to see who would set up a conference with what teams (not to make anyone upset.) It is good sometimes to think outside the box and see what others may be thinking with a different view on an idea (not to slam the idea down and jump to conclusions about what is fair and not fair.)
