This was the system that Ohio used when I was in school 30 years ago. I'm assuming they still do. There were 7-9 teams in a conference, leaving 2-4 games to schedule outside the conference. I don't remember exactly how the points were counted, but it had nothing to do with rankings, or how much a team ran up the score. it was based on wins and the wins of your opponents and was weighted depening on weather they were A, 2A, 3A, 4A, etc. Conferences were not based on class, playoffs were.

 

This system created incredible rivalries. Stadiums would be packed. Long term rivalries were created that added to everything. Entire communities would turn out for games. My high school had 1000 students. Our home field sat 3000, and was standingroom only for most conference games.

 

I would love to see Anderson, Boyle, Danville, Mercer, East & West Jess, Garrard, Lincoln, & Washington
